Kanajar Welfare Association, Kuwait (KWAK)
organized a get together open to all Mangaloreans on Friday, the 27th of
September, 2002 at the Mishref Gardens, Kuwait. This is one of the
major events organized by KWAK annually to bring about unity among people
from the Canara region and also to promote/update the progress of Lourdes
Healthcare Hospital (LHH), currently under construction in Kanajar.
After serving a light breakfast organized by Inas Menezes, the program
started with a Prayer by Astra Saldanha, followed by a warm and appealing
welcome speech by KWAK President Lawrence D'Souza, who also introduced and
welcomed the Chief Guest of the day, Mr. Charles D'Sa. Baby Lenita D'Souza
presented the Chief Guest with a bouquet. In his brief address, Mr. D'Sa,
who is also a Sponsor of LHH, congratulated the community on the inception
and fast progress of the project. He also wished the event a grand success.
Reeda Saldanha, Hilda D'Souza and Rose Mary Mendonca then took charge of
games for children in three different age groups, followed by a fun-filled
game for adults by Nancy Lobo. Under the supervision of Vice-President
Walter Lobo, over 100 men and women tried their full strength with the shot
put proving one better than the other. Robert D'Souza was the overall
in-charge of games.
Lawrence Saldanha, the Chairman of Lourdes Kanajar Charitable Trust (Regd.),
while updating the progress of the project; highlighted the benefits of
working collectively and emphasized the need to think in terms of community
development & prosperity. He appreciated the role played by KWA members
throughout the Gulf and back home to ensure that the first pilot project
undertaken by Kanajarians is a huge success so that it becomes a living
example for others to follow. An updated brochure was then released by
distinguished guest of the day, Mr. John Hislop, General Manager of M/s
Abdulla Rejab AlRifai Co. Mr. Hislop, a British Citizen who has been closely
associated with Indians for most part of his life admired Kanajarians for
their selfless work in the area of economic development of the community. He
then honored the contributors of LHH with a bouquet.
Following prayer before meal by Hilda D'Souza, delicious and mouth-watering
meal was served by well known Tip Top Caterers headed by Johny Suratkal
under the supervision of Dennis D'Souza. Benedict Saldanha supported by
Prakash Saldanha and Anthony Miranda kept the crowd cool with variety of
soft drinks. As the crowd settled for lunch, some enthusiastic young men and
women came forward to show their talents in singing, dancing & mimicry.
Unable to resist the tempting high-beat music provided by popular band "DJ
MIX" headed by none other than Kanajar-Mangalore DJ duo M/s Dinesh D'Silva &
Joyson D'Souza, the crowd plunged into the open ground for masala dance,
which lasted for well over an hour, which followed by a game of Housie.
Before the commencement of popular fun games like tug of war and kabaddi,
prizes were distributed to winners of various games, housie, spot and bucket
raffle. Jecintha Pinto, the general secretary of KWAK proposed a vote of
thanks.
While Mr. Paul Aranha provided free photography for the event, Mr. Steven
Machado and Mr. Rudolf D'Souza ably compered the program.
