Dubai: Workshop on Konkanni poetry - new page in the history of Konkanni literature

Dubai, July 26:  Daiji Dubai, the forum of Konkani Writers in the United Arab Emirates wrote a new page in the history of Konkani Literature when their Workshop on Konkani Poetry was inaugurated by well known Journalist Mr. Edward D'Mello on the 26th of July at the Arab Udupi Restaurant, Burdubai, Dubai. The workshop was well attended by 25 enthusiastic konkani lovers including the contemporary and the budding konkani poets.

Mr. Edward D'Mello, Freelance Journalist in the Gulf who had worked with the Times of India, and the Midday whilst in India, inaugurated the Workshop in the morning by lighting the lamp.

The leading Konkani Poet Melvyn Rodrigues spoke about the history of Poetry in general and the konkani poetry in particular. He started with Illiad and Odyssey - the Greek Epics by Homer, touched Indian Sanskrit Poetry and Golden Era of English Poetry and gave a detailed picture of Konkani Poetry starting from the 14th century "Nam Dev Gatha" upto the Zage Kavi movement.

Ancy Paladka, another Konkani Poet who has devoted himself to children's poetry presented his paper on Children's Poetry. He explained the various aspects of Children's Poetry, its features, its difference from other forms of poetry, its history and its importance in today's world.

Stephen Mascarenhas who is better known as Hemacharya spoke on the subject: "Criticism - why and how?" He in his presentation told how criticism can be best utilised for the continuous improvement of any literature.

Mr. Walter Nandalike welcomed the gathering at the beginning. Mr. Dayan D'Souza gave the vote of thanks. Mr. Lawrence Saldanha, Kuwait; Mr. Valerian Peris; Mr. Andrew D'Cunha; Mr. Thomas Saldanha were present among the participants.
