It was instituted in 1965 and since then 39 writers of Indian languages have won this award. Every year one living writer from among the 18 major languages (including Konkani) is chosen for this award after considering his lifetime work. In the 37 years history of the awards, the greatest number of awards (6) have gone to Kannada writers. The Award has acquired a unique prestige in the world of literature. It is mainly because of the tremendous effort that goes into the selection of the right recipient. In the process of selection, the role of Language Advisory Committee is very significant. Though Konkani has become eligible for this award eversince it was included in the 8th schedule of the Constitution in 1992, no Konkani writer has so far won the award. The last award given was for the year 2001 which went to Assamese writer Indira Goswami. (From our Mumbai Correspondent)
