KONKANI LINGUIST, DR. WILLIAM MADTHA BAGGS JANAPADA ACADEMY
AWARD

Feb: 25 Konkani literary expert &
linguistic scholar Dr. William Madtha bagged the Janapada
experts award of Karnataka Janapada and Yakshagana Academy
(Govt. of Karnataka). Academy President Dr. Hi. Shi. Ramachandre
Gowda announced this at Honnavar on 25th. Bangalore University
Research Centre Director Dr Siddalingaiah and Bagalkot College
Principal Dr Sriram Ittananavar are the other two who have been
selected for the same award.
Basically from South Canara Dr. Madtha
is the Head of the Department of Linguistics at Karnataka
University, Dharwad since many years. He was also a director of
Karnataka University Kannada Research Centre. There are a number
of research articles on folk & Linguistics of Konkani and other
languages to his credit.
Academy President also announced the
Jnana-Vignana awards, the award for mobilisation, the awards for
promoting, publicising and development of folk arts for the year
2001 & the awards for books for the year 2000.
He said that the awards carry cash prize
of Rs 5,000 while the awards for books include Rs 3,000 in cash
along with a citation and a memento. The selection committee has
chosen people above 60 years, who have rendered yeoman service
in the field of folk art and folk research.
The award ceremony will be held in Kolar
district he said.
