Mangalore, September 23:
With the approval of All India Engineering Education Committee St. Joseph
Engineering College of Diocese of Mangalore's first academic year was
inaugurated today by Bishop of Mangalore, Rt. Rev. Dr. Aloysius Paul
D'Souza by lighting a deepa. This college is located at Vamanjoor's 30
acres land, which will be affiliated to Vishveshwarayya Engineering
University, Belgaum. This is the first ever engineering college of
Catholic Community in Karnataka State.
Mr. Albert Wilfred D'Souza, a prominent businessman from Mumbai who hails
from Pangala worked hard in getting approval to this new engineering
college. He was the chief guest for today's programme. Even though
Catholics are only 2% in India, they educate 20% of India's population he
said. He said that, 'I am very happy, now we started teaching students in
engineering field also.' He explained that how he took trouble in getting
approvals to start two engineering colleges and one management college in
Mumbai by Catholic Community.
Another chief guest Mr. Blasius M. D'Souza, ex-law minister of Karnataka
and Surathkal National Institute of Technology (old KREC) step director
Dr. Aloysius Sequeira gave their best wishes to college. Diocesan
chancellor Rt. Rev. Moras Prabhu held prayer ceremony. College
correspondent Vicar General of Mangalore Diocese, Msgr. Fred V. Pereira
explained how the troubles were taken to start this college in a limited
time with all facilities. In the month of January, 2003 college will be
inaugurated in the presence of national leaders he said. President of
India, Dr. Abdul Kalam and Defence Minister George Fernandes will be
attending this event.
New college principal, Dr. P. Sudhakara Shetty that this college will be
converted into an institution with value filled education system. From
the president's chair, Bishop D'Souza remembered those who worked hard to
make this dream come true. This new college will be built as a model
institution he said. College director, Fr. Valerian D'Souza welcomed and
said that dream of three lakh Catholics came true today. Professor Mr.
Errol Miranda proposed the vote of thanks. Another professor Mrs. Prajwal
D'Souza compered the programme
