Use money in banks for coastal Development: Fernandes

Mangalore, December 21: The money generated in Dakshina Kannada district and placed in its famous banks, should be utilised for the development of the coastal region keeping in view the problem of unemployment among the youth, said Defence Minister George Fernandes here on Saturday.  Inaugurating the two-day World Bunts' Convention at Bangrakulur here, Mr. Fernandes said such a programme of using bank funds would not only create jobs in the region but also reduce migration of the youth to countries abroad.

Congratulating the Bunts for organising such a massive convention by attracting members of the community from all over the world, he said it was not just a convention, but a celebration of the achievements of enterprising Bunts in various parts of the nation and abroad.  Hinting at the sufferings the Bunts underwent about 50 years ago when land reforms deprived them of their traditional land holdings and compelled them to take up different vocations, the Defence Minister said the members of the Bunt community with their qualities of courage and hard work, had earned the goodwill of people wherever they went. They succeeded in their ventures in various areas. They had every reason to celebrate their achievements.

The convention was also an occasion to deliberate on ways to help uplift the weaker sections among the community and to exchange expertise in various fields.  Making mention of the qualities of Bunts such as helping the needy and fighting for a cause, Mr. Fernandes said as he entered the huge conference pendal, he was thrilled to see the dais named after late Justice K. S. Hegde the former Lok Sabha Speaker.  He recalled the days he spent with K. S. Hegde in their fight against emergency and authoritarian rule in the country.

Mr. Fernandes also recalled the days when as a youth, he was driven out of home by his father for joining the socialists. For many days, he was looked after by late Dr. Nagappa Alva, also a leading Bunt leader and freedom fighter.  Hailing the contribution of Bunts in national integration and social harmony the defence minister said in the end, every community must realise that their interest lay in the well-being of the nation.  The army may guard the borders but the well-being and safety of the nation depended on the harmony and peace among its people. A few hundred foreign invaders could take over this great nation in the past because of the lack of harmony and peace among the people the defence minister pointed out and called upon all communities to ponder over these issues.
