Holiday turns sour; UP couple robbed in Mangalore

MANGALORE: An autorickshaw driver and his accomplices robbed a couple from Uttar Pradesh of valuables worth more than Rs 50,000 in Mangalore on Wednesday night.

Deepak Joshi (27) and his wife Sonali (22), along with their four-year-old son Nikhil, residents of Durgakund in Uttar Pradesh, had come to this coastal town on a visit.

An autorickshaw driver accosted them at the railway station and, on learning that they were first-time visitors, offered to show them “affordable lodging’’. On the way, the driver tagged along two more persons. When the vehicle reached VT Road, the driver and his accomplices grabbed Joshi’s son and threatened to kill him if they were not handed over the valuables. With no other option, Joshi handed over Rs 14,000 in cash and jewellery worth Rs 40,000.

Joshi has lodged a complaint with the Bunder police. The auto number that Joshi noted down — KA-19 6680 — is said to be fake.

RTO Giridar said the number belonged to a goods tempo. Also, the number has not been allotted to any autorickshaw even after working out different combinations with the codes, he added. The police lodged the Joshis at a hotel in Bunder area. The Joshis were to leave the city on Thursday night after a final round of talks with the police.

The Bunder police said they were enquiring with the autorickshaw drivers operating from the railway station about the identity of the accused. They suspect the crime was committed using a fake number plate. But one question eludes answers: Since Nikhil boarded the vehicle at the railway auto-stand, how could fellow drivers miss the fake number and not recognise an outsider among their ranks?
