Door-to-door
garbage collection in Bangalore City
Bangalore,
December 20:
Two months and Bangalore
will be bin-free - if the BCC scheme succeeds. The BCC, no longer hesitant
to introduce novelty, proposes to introduce the door-to-door garbage
collection system in every road and by lane. Once the cooperation of
civ ic-minded residents is gained, community bins will be gradually removed.
The BCC's immediate task is to effectively implement door-to-door garbage
collection in the pourakarmika-manned health wards.
Once the system stabilises, the BCC will remove community bins in two
months, BCC Special Commissioner I. S. N. Prasad said. After covering
BCC health wards, the system will be extended to private health wards.
Once the new private contracts are approved by the government, 100 per cent
door-to-door garbage collection will be made mandatory. "We are not in
a hurry to make Bangalore
dustbin-free overnight. Once citizens are confident about the door-to-door
collection system, community bins can be removed," Prasad explained.
At potential garbage collection points, the BCC will replace the ugly cement
bins with small, stylish bins that do not look shoddy. In nonresidential
areas, small litterbins will be placed at various points for collection of
only dry garbage. The strategy: three rounds of cleaning every day;
pourakarmikas collect garbage from households in the mornings; make another
round after 10.30
am
for shops and commercial establishments in residential areas; and another
off-shift garbage clearance around 2:30
p.m.
In markets, night cleaning has also been made mandatory. A Monthly
Assessment Committee comprising health officers and registered resident
associations will be constituted to review cleaning work.
Touching
the heart of the poor
Bangalore,
December 20:
US-based "Gift of Life" today launched its initiative here to
treat at least 1,000 poor children under 12 years needing cardiac care in
the next one year in India.
Gift of Life has tied-up with 10 hospitals across the country, including the
Heart Care Foundation of Bhagwan Mahave er Jain Heart Centre here, where
surgeries on two children with a hole in their heart were performed today
under "Save-a-Child" programme.
The two children Sachin (9) and Megha (8) from rural Karnataka were admitted
to the Heart Centre to undergo surgery. They are among the 15 selected by
the hospital from a mini camp conducted at Dharwad recently. Both Megha from
Dharwad and Sachin from Ramdurga had a condition known as artial septal
defect (ASD) and needed a closure of the hole. Megha's father has a small
store at Hubli, which does not yield much income, and Sachin's father is a
small - time businessman.
Dr. S. S. Ramesh, Chief Cardiologist, BMJ Heart Centre, said both these
children had a problem commonly called a hole in the heart, which resulted
in the mixing of red oxygenated blood with blue deoxygenated blood. It was a
potentially fatal condition because they could never lead normal lives and
faced the risk of early death, he added. Mr. Ravishankar Bhooplapur,
Chairman, Gift of Life, India,
told reporters here that the beneficiaries would mainly be from villages and
mofussil areas who could not afford the treatment. "We want to touch as
many hearts as possible, particularly in this part of the world," he
said.
Mr. Bhooplapur said since its inception in 1975, Gift of Life had flown more
than 2,500 children to the US from several nations for sophisticated
open-heart surgery--from Europe, the Carribean, South and Central America,
Africa, Asia and within US. Till now, Heart Care Foundation has funded
19 cardiac operations, costing about Rs. 25 lakh. The most recent one was an
eight-hour major cardiac surgery costing Rs. 3 lakh on a 46-year old man
from Chintamani of Ko lar district.
