Ms. Violet Godwin, who came on vacation on two weeks to spend some days with
her brother James Godwin in Mahim, Mumbai has been missing since Sunday.
Ms. Violet was originally from India,
who used to work as a reporter for Gulf News in Bahrain.
She arrived here in Mumbai on December 9. Sunday she went to get some
fish from Citylight Market and never returned home.
James filed a complaint at Mahim police station stating that his sister has
been kidnapped by local politicians, builder and local MLA. James was
fighting against interested parties in the neighbourhood to protect trees at
Ratanvilla. Because of this James and the builder had some arguments.
Builder and local MLA Gambhir are friends. Gambhir rejected James'
allegations and said that James is trying to get money from the
builder and creating stories. He said that he got involved in this
incident just because the builder complained him about James. There is
no connection between him and disappearance of Violet he said.

Petty
shops set afire in Ullal
Thokkottu,
December 18: Some
miscreants set on fire small petty shops in Thokkottu, near Ullal, around 10:30
p.m.
on the outskirts of the city here last night, police said. Some
miscreants set fire to thirty-five small petty shops erected on the footpath
at Ullal Tuesday night, police said. All the shops were reduced to ashes,
they said. Two fire-tenders from Mangalore putout the fire with the
help of local police. None was injured in the incident, police said.
Reason behind the incident is not known. More than one lakh property and
things have been lost to fire . Efforts are on to trace the miscreants
and investigation is going on, police added.
State
welfare plan review meet held
Mangalore,
December 18:
District horticulture department distributed 3,40,204 variety of fruit
plants and other plantation crop plants to beneficiaries till November, said
SK Zilla Panchayath Jyothi R. Salian at a review meeting of the Karnataka
Welfare Plan. The animal husbandry department has done artificial
insemination for 4,000 cattle till November and anti-disease vaccination has
been given to 3,595 animals, Salian said. She further added that
nearly 13,520 fowl had also been vaccinated against Kokkare disease. Health
and family department had given DPT vaccination and also polio vaccination
to 2,153 children and BCG vaccination to 2,066 children.
Dazzling
fashion show at MIT
Manipal,
December 18:
Two glittering fashion shows left the audience spellbound at the MIT
quadrangle last week organised by the students of Manipal Academy of Higher
Education (MAHE) and Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT).
Accompanied by a foot-tapping music, models sashayed on the catwalk
displaying oodles of talent and an exotic range of clothes. Both the fashion
shows choreographed well drew praises from both the judges and the audience.
After the three rounds of fashion shows, including the ethnic, casuals and
formals, the judges including Vidya Shenoy, Raj Rodrigues and Tharesh
declared Sahil Sehgal as 'Mr. MIT' and Deepthi Dinesh as 'S. MIT.' On
the following day, 'Union Day c elebrations' was organised by Students
Council at MIT quadrangle. Ashwatha Naik was declared as 'Mr. MAHE' and
Sneha as 'Ms. MAHE.' More than 50 participants from prominent colleges
including MIT, Manipal, KMC, Manipal, CODS, Manipal, CODS, Mangalore and
COAHS, Manipal also took part in the contest.
Bus
fares will be reduced, says DC

December 18:
The Deputy Commissioner, S. R. Umashankar, said on Tuesday that fares of
private service buses would be brought down by 5 to 7.5 per cent in two
days. He was presiding over a meeting with the representatives of Canara Bus
Operators' Association, the Consumer Forum, voluntary organisations, and
citizens. Umashankar said a decision on reducing the bus fare would be
taken in consultation with the Deputy Commissioner of South
Kanara
as uniform fares had to be maintained in Udupi and
South Kanara
districts. It could range between four to seven per cent on various routes.
The fares decided in the next two days would be final and would remain in
force until April 2004 and there would be no revision of bus fares
irrespective of an increase or a decrease in diesel prices. Henceforth bus
fares would be revised annually. The bank rates and the telephone
charges had decreased resulting in some gains for the bus operators. He was
supported by representatives from the SFI, the CITU and the Udupi Consumer
Forum.
Although accidents involving the buses had come down to 90 per cent since
the appointment of timekeepers, drivers of private buses, who had an
accident free run in the past five years, would be felicitated on January 26
during the "Zilla U tsav". Narayanaswamy, RTO, P. R. Nayak,
association president, Damodar Aithal, Convenor of Udupi Consumer Forum, and
Sorappa Shetty, Deputy Superintendent of Police were present.
People's
help sought in preventing pollution
Mangalore,
December 18: Protecting environment is possible when people
extend their help to departments, which are fighting against environment
pollution, Transport Minister B. Ramanath Rai said. Inaugurating a
campaign against air pollution, which is being conducted jointly by the
district administration and Pollution Control Board at the Town Hall here on
Wednesday, Rai said such programmes need greater appreciation and help from
the public.
Considering the density of population and number of vehicles, about 40 teams
have been formed in
Bangalore
to prevent pollution of environment. The Government has planned to extend
this idea to other towns and cities of the state, Rai said. Mangalore
City Corporation Mayor Shashidhar Hegde, who presided over the function,
said healthy atmosphere, will become a reality when every individual takes
care about his surroundings. He also advocated the need of educating
children on environmental protection.
South Kanara Zilla Panchayath president Jyothi R. Salian, ZP Chief Executive
Officer Gonal Bheemappa, Superintendent of Police Seemanth Kumar Singh,
economist and writer Dr. N. Murari Ballal, Environmentalist Upendra

Workshop
on photography held

December 18: A one-day workshop on photography was held on
December 15, 2002, at School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore by
College Youth Group "Youth Quake" in association with PROLAB, a
professional colour lab. The workshop was attended by students and
staff members and was inaugurated by Orthodontist and photographer Dr.
Akhter Husain. Staff advisor Joselyn Lobo explained that the workshop was
organised to provide basic tips to budding student photographers and
encourage the use of cameras among students.

for rubber workers

December 18: Workers under the Rubber Board have been now
provided with insurance and small savings plan under which they will get a
maximum of Rs. 50,000 as compensation. The insurance premium is Rs. 250 per
year for ten years. The application forms can be got from the Zonal

Secretary Rubber Mandali, Kottayam-2, Kerala. This was informed by the

Old
vehicles banned in Bangalore City

December 18: To control vehicular pollution in
Bangalore
, the state government has banned all transport vehicles which are 15 years
old or more, from entering the city. In addition, use of transport
vehicles, which are over 20 years old, is banned in the city limits with
effect from January 1. Vehicle owners are requested to remove
transport vehicles which are over 20 years old from the city limits, said a
press note.
Digital
signature system in judiciary by Jan

December 18: The Karnataka judiciary is all set to incorporate
digital signature system from January 2003, which would help the litigants
and lawyers to obtain certified copies of judgments or documents from a
court nearby to their places within a few minutes. The State judiciary
is the first to introduce this system across the country in the
administration of courts. The system also enables speedy and authentic
communication between various courts. Justice G. C. Bharuka, senior
judge of the High Court, who is also in-charge of computerisatio n of courts
in the State, disclosed the introduction digital signature in the State
judiciary during a presentation on the system to the judges of High Court
and state judicial officers.
He said that the State judiciary is forging ahead towards e-governance even
at taluk level with the computerisation of all the courts in the State. He
also said that all lower courts would be connected to the High Court through
Wide Area Network (WAN) by January 2003. On-line management of
administration of courts would become easier and cost-effective with the
computerisation and introduction of WAN through satellite, Justice Bharuka
added.
He further said digital signature has legally been accepted in
India
with the introduction of Information Technology Act, 2000. Mr. K. N.
Gupta, Controller of Certifying Authorities, Ministry of Technology, made a
presentation on digital signature on this occasion. Mr. Gupta also
handed over a smart card to Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court N. K. Jain,
which would authorise Justice Jain to subscribe his digital signature on
electronic document.

get digital identity cards

December 18: Oasis - a project providing digital identity for
students, complete with details on parents/guardians, academic performance,
blood group and others - reportedly the first of its kind in the country was
launched today. Students of the

, Palace Guttahalli here became the proud first-owners of these identity
cards. Comparing the effort to the Bhoomi land records project, Mr.
Vasanth Reddy of Neomarg Technologies Pvt Ltd, who have provided technology
and design for the programme, noted: "Information stored in these cards
cannot be forged and can be cross checked.''
It makes the process of getting a host of services like passport, ration
cards, driving license, bank account, etc., much more easily. In other
words, services requiring the presentation of documents like medical
certificate, birth certificate, academic details, address proof and others,
can now be availed by presenting just one single document, he said.
