Naik presented with Shashwathi award

‘Shashwathi’,
Nanjangudu Thirumalamba Award, for 2001 was presented to
well-known Konkani writer, Ms Hema Naik for her novel
Bhogadandd by the renowned Kannada writer, Dr Chandrashekhar
Kumbhar, at a special ceremony held at the campus of NMKRV
College for Women, Bangalore. The award carries Rs 20,000, in
cash and the icon of Kamadhenu.
The award was
also presented to Dr Pratibha Satpati, a Oriya writer for her
book Ada Ada Nakshatra, for 1999 and to Rajasthani writer, Ms
Rani Laxmi Kumari Chundavat, for 2000.
The Sadodita
Sahitya Awards, Karnataka Kalpavalli Awards and Gargi Awards
were also presented on the occasion by Dr Kumbhar.
Dr Kumbhar, in
his speech said that, the practice of identifying women’s
literature from various parts of the country, getting the
complete bio-data of women writers and giving away of
national-level calibre awards was an appreciative effort.” He
also said that there was an increasing interest in the
writings of women.
Ms Hema Naik in
her speech said that, most of the writers have portrayed woman
as sensitive and weak character in their writings and by doing
so have captured the hearts of the readers. “We rarely come
across the picture of a strong and fearless, daring and
dashing woman. The change is necessary,” she opined.
Regarding her
award winning book, Bhogadandd, she said that the book has
drawn the picture of the ill-effects of money earned in Gulf
on the life of womenfolk in Goa.”
The chairman of
the National Education Committee Trust, Mr M K Pandurang
Shetty presided over the function. The other dignitaries at
the function included the chairman of Karnataka government’s
Kannada Book Authority, Prof Mallepuram G Venkatesh and
Konkani writer, Mr Pundalik Naik.
Thee function
began with a welcome song by Kumari Supriya and group. Mr D A
Pandu welcomed the guests, while principal of the college, Ms
K S Umadevi made an introductory speech and introduced the
guests.
