International Postal Stamps Exhibition:
Silver Medal to Brahmawar Danniel Monteiro

Brahmawar, December 16: Recently International Postal Stamps Exhibition, 'PhilaKorea-2002' was held at Seoul , Korea.  In this exhibition, Mr. Danniel Monteiro, Brahmawar SMS College Officer employee won silver medal for his Swan Postal Stamps.  In 1997 Mr. Monteiro exhibit ed his waterbirds.  He has several medals for his credit.  In 1997 Indepex-97 which was held in New Delhi , he received silver medal; in 2000 Bangkok and New Delhi International Postal Stamp Exhibitions, he received bronze and silver medals respectively.  Vipa-2002 International Postal Stamp Exhibition which was held in Austria , he received bronze medal.  He is the proud member of South Kanara and Udupi Postal Stamp Collectors Association.  So far he exhibited stamps in 106 exhibitions and created awareness in hobby and environment.

Grama Panchayat President & Vice President elections

Karkala, December 16: Karkala, Belthangady and Kundapura Taluk's Grama Panchayats held their president and vice president elections today and the following Konkan Catholics got elected as Grama Panchayat presidents in four Panchayats.

Belthangady Taluk: Laila: Mr. Francis D'Souza - President
Kundapura Taluk: Tallur: Mrs. Ida Mendonca - President
Padubidri: Mrs. Lawna Andrade - President.

Pudu Grama Panchayat elections

Bantwal, December 16: Congress bagged 23 seats out of 26 in Bantwal Taluk Pudu Grama Panchayat elections on Sunday.  BJP kept two seats and independent one seat.  There are three Konkan Catholic candidates won their seats.  They are: Mrs. Theresa D'Souza and Mrs. Lydia Pinto both Congress Party and Mr. Vincent Nazareth supported by Congress Party.  In last elections Congress had only 5 seats and now they are almost five folds.

Mulky City Panchayat elections

Mulky, December 16: Mulky City Panchayat elections were held on Sunday here and out of 15 seats, Congress Party bagged 11 seats and declared their landslide victory. Previously BJP held seven seats and this time they were able to keep only one seat.  Janata Dal had five seats and this time they have only three.  Congress popularity shun opposition parties in Mulky City .  There were three Christians contested and only one, Celine Monteiro from Congress Party won from III Ward.  Valerian, BJP from IX Ward and Gracy Castelino, Independent from X Ward lost their election.

Rs. 4.40 cr sanctioned for road works

 

Udupi, December 16: The Union Minister of Surface Transport has sanctioned Rs. 4.40 crore for the strengthening and asphalting of State Highways and major district roads in the Udupi Lok Sabha constituency from the Central Road Fund (CRF) for 2002-03.  In a press release here, the MP Vinaykumar Sorake, said 80 lakh was sanctioned for the Vaderhobli-Kone-Basrur Hosangady Road , Rs. 80 lakh for the Hemmady-Vandse- Kollur Road , Rs. 90 lakh for Vadehobli-Kandlur-Balkudru Road , Rs. 80 lakh for Malpe-Udupi-Karkala Road and Rs. 1.10 crore for the Vagga-Uligram Road in Bantwal taluk. 

Smoke causes panic near MCF

 

Mangalore, December 16: A large quantity of smoke billowing out of a pipe near Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizer (MCF) factory last night caused panic to the nearby residents but it was stopped in the wee hours of on Monday, police said.  The leakage in a pipe between MCF and Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) was reported last night, police told the reporters on Monday morning.

Several engineers from MCF and MRPL and officials from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) searched for the leakage source till the wee hours of Monday and stopped it, police said. None was affected in the leakage, they said. Earlier, residents of the nearby colonies complained that they were feeling some foul smell near MCF. Meanwhile, the MCF officials said the l eakage was not found in their factory premises.

Human Rights Day observed

 

Mangalore, December 16: The South Kanara district unit of the People Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) observed the Human Rights Day at the University College in the city on Saturday.  A press release from the president of PUCL Dennis D’Sa stated that Dr. Olinda Periera, founder principal of Roshani Nilaya School of Social Work was the chief guest on the occasion. Former Deputy Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) Judith Mascarenhas delivered the keynote address.

Minister for more financial aid to melas

 

Katapady, December 16: The District In-charge Minister, Vasanth V. Salian, said on Saturday that the state Government was giving importance to Yuvajana Melas in rural areas. He was speaking after inaugurating the Udupi taluk-level Yuvajana Mela at Katapady.  Such melas acted as a forum for the youth in rural areas to exhibit their talent. When the youth got organised, their talents came out naturally.

Stating that all departments should support such meals, he said more monetary support should be given to them. Salian said he would relea se Rs. 5,000 from the MLAs fund as his contribution to the Mela.  The MLC, V. S. Acharya, said it was essential to teach moral values in schools. Facilities should be provided at schools to help facilitate the development of personality of children.

Yuvajana melas were a unique opportunity for young men and women to exhibit their talent, he said. Talent of the young could be channeled in the right direction, only when it was spotted during their school days, Dr. Acharya said.  Jayamalini welcomed the gathering. The officer in-charge of Sports and Youth Services Officer, Lingaraju, delivered the introductory remarks. The President of the Udupi Taluk Panchayat, Anita D'Souza, presided over the function. S. Soans proposed a vote of thanks. TP members Udaya Kumar Shetty, Gulshan Mohammed, and Sulochana Bangera, were present.

Six arrested for ragging

 

Mangalore, December 16: The City police arrested six students of Sreenivas Physiotherapy College on Saturday for ragging juniors.  Ac cording to the Pandeshwar police, final year students Vipul, Partha, Shalin, Maet, Jananthic and Shailesh locked up six first year students on December 6. The seniors then forced the juniors to undress and thrashed them with belts. The accused threatened their victims with dire consequences if they reported the incident to the college authorities.

However, a lecturer Dr. Philip Joshua, who was informed about the incident, lodged a complaint with the police. Acting swiftly, the police rounded up all the accused and produced them before a City court. They have been remanded in judicial custody till December 16.

Park landscaping work at Nanthur Cross 

Mangalore, December 16: The Lioness Club of Mangalore in association with Indian Oil Corporation took up the work of developing and landscaping the mini park at Nanthur Cross Junction Island .  Mangalore Lioness Club president, in a press release, stated that the mini park was inaugurated recently during the Lioness District Governor Basrur Rajeev Shettys official visit to the club.  Lioness president Viraja Shankar, past Governor Dr Santhosh Kumar Shasthri, Lions Club president Ashok Shenoy and Secretary Arun Shetty among others were present.

Decision on constituting 10 new taluks welcomed

 

Mangalore, December 16: Former minister and Janata Dal (United) South Kanara District president K. Amaranatha Shetty has welcomed the statement of Revenue Minister Srikanthiah about the constitution of ten more taluks.  Shetty, in a press release demanded that five more taluks should be formed in the undivided South Kanara district. He identified them as Mulki, Moodbidri, Byndoor, Brahmavar and Kadaba.

Shetty pointed out that necessary data and facts and figures had been supplied in detail to the Hundeakar Committee, Gaddige Gowda Committee, wh ich went into the issue and submitted their reports. The former minister said all the reports have favoured their demands regarding constituting new taluks.  In view of the increased population and land expanse and due to geographical and administrative reasons the above mentioned five taluks should be formed, Shetty urged. He expressed confidence on the fulfillment of the long pending demands of the taluks.

Encourage disabled children to exhibit talent: MLC

 

Mangalore, December 16: The MLC, V. S. Acharya said that a blueprint should be prepared for providing facilities to the physically challenged children in Udupi District. He was the chief guest at the physically challenged Persons Day function, jointly organised by the Department of Women and Child Welfare and the Department for the Welfare of physically challenged Persons, here.

Dr. Acarya said it was necessary to provide facilities to the physically challenged persons within a time frame. Sometimes, children became physically challenged due to the negligence of parents. It was essential to give more attention to the newborn babies and the children, the physically challenged had many hidden talents in them and opportunities should be provided to them to exhibit their talents, he added.

The Deputy Commissioner S. R. Umashankar said a special campaign would be launched in the district next year to focus on the facilities provided by the government to the physically challenged persons. This campaign would be taken up in association with various voluntary organisations. An integrated programme for the welfare of the physically challenged would be framed in consultation with all the departments and organisations, he said.

The Assistant Director of the Department of Women and Child Welfare, Gertrude Vegas, welcomed the gathering. The member of the taluk panchayath, Bhaskar Kotian, the Child Development Officer, R. Bekal and the Managing Trustee of the Manasa Organisation, Dr. Edward Lobo, were present. 

Workshop for doctors handling HIV cases held 

Mangalore, December 16: A special day-long workshop for doctors handling HIV related cases emphasised the need for a revolutionary change in the methods of handling the HIV cases and called for change in the approach of AIDS prevention campaign.  The workshop was organised by Karnataka State unit of Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) here on Sunday. IAP State unit president Dr. B. Bhaskar expressed concern over the misconception regarding AIDS among doctors. He said that many hospitals are rejecting HIV patients.

As many as 40 child specialists from all over the state participated in the workshop. Dr. Bhaskar along with experts like Dr. Lokeshwara, Dr. Pensy, Dr. S. N. Mathi, Dr. Agana Jaikar, Dr. Sanjeev Lewin and Dr. Vijaya Shenoy conducted counseling for doctors on handling patients through modern methods.  The doctors were also trained on the new medical technology to check the transfer of HIV virus from infected mother to child.
