“DARBAR” – A GALAXY OF KONKANI STARS! “

Give the people, what they want” – is the ultimate “Mantra” of success in the field of performing arts. And the “DARBAR” show organised by KANNIK Konkani periodical, on 15th December 2002 in Mangalore Milagres College Grounds did the same.

A galaxy of Konkani singing stars, artistically erracted massive stage, superb light and sound, ably supported by three international comperes – Darbar not only enthralled the 9000 plus crowd for 200 minutes, also walked away with laurel as one of the greatest entertaining event recently held in Mangalore history.

“Kannik Darbar 2002” – was a kind of beautiful artistic piece in which the artists were the wonderful colours and the organisers, who simply sketched drawing and filled in final touches.

The programme started with a aplomb. The show started with Mr. Maurice D’Sa, editor of “Kannik” – paternal concept of the show, speaking the opening words. Followed by melodious title song “Namaskar” composed by Mickmax and rendered by Ivy, Anita, Rony Crasta and Julian. Wilfy Rebimbus song “Kutam” along with his “Sangeet” family Meena, Veena and Vishwas. Henry D’Souza (oot oot Konknya.) Eric Ozario and Joyce ( Festa Santhek Yaago) Melwyn Peris ( Turbenth Vaztha) Mike Simon ( Lavina) Victor Concesso and Goan comedy queen Succrine ( Poi… Poi ) Wilson Olivera ( Paavs) Claude D’Souza ( Jingle Bells ) Vishwas Rebimbus ( Kaun gai ?.) Harry D’Souza (Venkatachala) Maxim Periera & Zeena Almeida ( Hai Tun Moga) Mentioning everybody’s name who have participated in this show is not possible in this review. Yet we have to pay salutes to all of them, who made this show a “good one” – long time to remember one.

Different types of compositions, different voices, different ways of performance, above all gathering of all the stalwarts of Konkani music on one “ stage” made this show memorable one. Now the cream of the show were three comperes. Mickmax – who has returned to the “stage” after 27 years with his inimitable style and “Sunshine round the clock” smile, Ronald Olivera (Bahrain) with his quick speed pearling words and Walter Nandalike (Dubai) with his royal gait and humour, carried the show to its peak.

Much publicised Udit Narayan was nowhere near the scene. Instead of Johny Lever, Johny lever Junior was present. But duplication can never come up to the standard of original. Some of his jokes did clicked but for ‘our” people “ ours own was the best”! The dances in the case of Mand Sobhann and Ocean Kids were superb. But the MTV kids were a disgrace with their mismatched choreography and jarring synchronisation. Their costumes were too bland. The show concluded with two super hit fast numbers Chedwan Bori Amcha Gavachin ( Mick Max) and Ami Dogi Xezara ( Henry and Melwyn) The show was good. But could have been even better or superb, if they had followed the verse. “ Practice makes a man perfect”
