HISTORICAL 'MUSCAT SPECIAL KANNIK ISSUE' RELEASED
AT THE GRAND M.C.C.P. INAUGURAL FUNCTION

Muscat August 17: After the refreshing
summer holidays, on Friday, the 16th August 2002, the Konkanni
speaking Mangalorean Catholics of Muscat flocked together in the
Ruwi Parish Hall for the 11th Inaugural function of their
association 'Mangalorean Catholic Centre of the Parish' (M.C.C.P.)
The function started with a Holy Mass offered by the Parish
Priest and advisor of M.C.C.P. Rev.Fr.Varghese Chempoly ofm.cap.,
followed by the inaugural proceedings and a variety
entertainment show at 12.00 noon. Packed crowd stood and
observed one minute silence and gave 'Shradhanjali' for Late
Rev.Fr.Augustine Antao (64), founder of M.C.C.P. who passed away
in Salalah on 1st July 2002 due to cardiac arrest. After a brief
opening prayer lead by Shri Denis Mascarenhas, the spiritual &
community service secretary, a melodious welcome song was sung
by the MCCP choir group. Then followed the presidential address
by the new M.C.C.P. Vice-President Shri Lancy Pinto in the
absence of the President Shri Leo Quadros.
The new executive committee members for the year 2002-2003 who
were chosen during the general body meeting of the association
in May this year, were introduced by Shri Gerry D'Mello, the
Master of Ceremony for the day's function. The Hon. Chairman
Shri Stanley Fernandes then escorted Rev.Fr.Varghese, the chief
guest, and the guest of honour Rev.Fr.Aloysius Furtado a guest
priest from Mumbai, to the dias. Then there was a Chairman's
message who in his speech urged the Executive Committee to work
hand in hand to keep the Mangalorean unity strong as ever.

The chief guest of the function Rev.Fr.Varghese, parish priest
and advisor of M.C.C.P. inaugurated the 11th glorious year of
M.C.C.P. by lighting a lamp followed by his address delivered to
the full-house gathering. The ex-president Shri Henry Martis
then felicitated the outstanding MCCP student of last year's
CBSE Board Examination of 10th Standard. He presented a letter
of merit and a cash prize in dollars to Miss Tanya Pereira the
proud recipient of the prize.
This was followed by the inauguration of the long awaited
historical Muscat special issue of "Kannik" Fortnightly
Magazine, by the guest of honour Rev.Fr.Aloysius Furtado. This
special issue of the magazine was presented by "Borpi Mithr" the
popular Konkanni writer's forum in the Konkanni world under the
aegis of veteran award winning Konkanni writer Shri Clarence,
Kaikmba who is also the editor of 'Kathamrith' column of the
most prestigious Konkanni web site www.konkandaiz.com. This was
followed by the presentation of flower bouquets to Shri Hubert
Alvares of OUA Travels, and Shri Oswald Soares, the Ex-Chairman
of MCCP, who sponsored the air-tickets and gold pendants
respectively as prizes for various competitions of Kannik
special issue. The Hon.Editor of Kannik special issue Shri
Clarence, Kaikamba then thanked the main sponsor of the issue
Smt.Mebal Pinto, General Manager of Marmul Travels and all those
who have contributed immensely for the great success of this
issue.

The other highlights of the day were: Artistic and musical
dances performed by small and big boys and girls of the
association. They enlivened the entire audience with the rhythm
of their music and the movements of their dance! These dances
were choreographed by well known Smt.Felcy Fernandes and budding
choreographers Kum.Priya Aranha, Kum Priti Aranha and Kum Lin
Pinto. The program was interspersed with hilarious ribs tickling
jokes enacted by Shri Walter Mendonca, Shri Walter Pinto and
group, the comedians and actors par excellence of the
association. There was also a bingo game and a raffle draw to
try anyone's luck.
After the proposal of vote of thanks by the general secretary
Smt.Helen Carvalho, a delicious and sumptuous meal was served to
the members and their guests. The tasty meal of Mangalorean
Cuisine was catered by the Oman's one and only "Arab Udupi
Restaurant" Muscat, managed by Shri Alwyn Saldanha.
Thus the first event of the new MCCP year came to a close,
leaving the members to eagerly await for the ensuing hectic and
entertaining events of the remaining period of the year.
