Konkani Sahithya Academy Awards:
To preserve culture, we should save Konkani


Honnavar, July 14: In Karnataka there are 25 lakh Konkani speaking people, Konkanas who belongs to various religions have thier own culture.  To protect and preserve this culture we should save our mother tongue Konkani.  Awarding Konkans who gave thier gifts by serving is not only protecting language, also preservation of its culture said Academy president Msgr. Dr. Alexander Faustin D'Souza during annual awards function here at Honnavar Prathibhodaya Sharavathi Kala Mandir.  Konkani is one of the 18 languages recognised by government of India.  This function is in the tenth year of government's recognition to Konkani in eighth schedule is very meaningful.  Mother tongue takes mother's place.  Wherever Konkani speaking people are, however they live, we should not forget culture based mother tongue Konkani he added. 

Prof. Bennet Pinto introduced Vidwan M. Madhava Pai from Shimoga who gave his contributions to Konkani literature.  Zilla Panchayat past president Mr. R. S. Raikar felicitated him.  Mrs. Kusuma Pai introduced Mr. N. B. Kamath from Mangalore who contributed to Konkani stage and Mr. Shreepada Jannu felicitated him.  Mr. Raghavendra Rao introduced Mr. Harry D'Souza who contributed to Konkani music and Bhatkal MLA Mr. J. D. Naika felicitated him.  Mr. Praveen Fernandes introduced Mr. Mingel Antona Siddi for his contribution to Konkani Janapad and Mr. R. S. Raika felicitated him.  Mrs. Gladys Rego introduced Fr. V. V. Menezes for his contribution to Konkani journalism and on behalf of Bishop, Msgr. Dr. A. F. D'Souza felicitated him.  Mr. U. S. Shenoy from Kundapura Vidyaranga Mithramandali, who received special award was introduced by Mr. U. S. Shenoy and MLA Mr. J. D. Naika felicitated him.  Academy members honoured awardees by introducing them.  Shawl, memento, maan potr and Rs. 5000 each was given to all award winners who were seated on special chairs on the dais and Harry's Silver Band played music to their honour. 

MLA Mr. J. D. Naika said that honouring achievers is like honouring community, language and culture.  Let their honour become inspiration to others.  Behind various languages there is a juice of culture.  Let it live longer and grow he said.  Guests Mr. R. S. Raikar said speaking language playing a major role in making life meaningful, our ancisters culture, we should preserve by protecting and saving our language.  Konkani speaking people should give their gift to Konkani language he added.  On behalf of awardees, Mr. Madhava Pai said that academy is appreciating our little work in the field of Konkani just the way a mother appreciates small jobs done by her children.  Konkani workers getting award in this filled auditorium is very encouraging he said and thanked academy for its awards to Konkani achievers.

Karwar Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. William D'mello presided over the programme.  No matter how much educated one person is, he is still a son or daughter to their mother.  Konkani language has a place as a mother.  Kannada Nadu is our mother land and Konkani is our mother.  Unselfish work in the field of Konkani is very appreciable he said and congratulated academy for its work towards Konkani workers.

Before the programme a procession was taken with Harry's Silver Band. Invocation and Jaya Konkani Matha dance performance by Konkani Kalamancha, Manky started the function.  Academy registrar Mr. S. H. Rudrappa and Academy members and Konkani writers took part in the programme.  Various cultural groups performed their programmes.  Writers Mr. Vasudeva Shanubaug and Miss Nagaratna compered the programme.  Registrar proposed vote of thanks.

'Raknno' Lekhak Sammelan
 


Mangalore, July 14:
"Raknno Lekhak Sammelan" was held at the Bishop's House today. About 30 Konkani wirters were there including M/S. Mick-Max, Jerry kulshekar, Herolpius, Dolphy Cascia, Dr. Edward Nazareth and others. Mr. Jerry Kulshekar inaugurated the sammelan. Dr. Nazareth spoke on behalf of the Lekhaks and Mr. Dolphy Lobo, editor Jhelo and proprietor of Punnov Prakashan on behalf of Editors. While talking Mr. Dolphy Lobo narrated the incident of Court Case, which he faced recently. In response of this, Mr. H. R. Alva narrated the Court Case, which Mr. Austin Prabhu, then editor of Mithr, Jhelo and Kannik faced in Seventees, about 27 years ago.

More time for Konkani on TV

 

Bangalore, July 14: At present Konkani has only 20 minutes slot in Bangalore Doordarshan (TV).  This has been increased to two hours.  On DD1 second and fourth Friday evening from 6:00 to 10:30 and in 'Chandana' on second and fourth Friday evening at 6:30 Konkani programmes will be telecasted.  Konkani poet, Mr. Anantha Bhatta from Kochi had fought for this time increase.  Konkani Bhasha and Sanskriti Prathishtana from Kochi felicitated Mr. Anantha for his efforts in this regard.
