Thokkottu bus and car collision:
Eye witness died of cardiac arrest
 


 

Mangalore, January 13: Last night in Kallapu near Thokkottu, outskirts of Mangalore, car and bus collided and caused a fatal accident.  One eye witness from local area, Mr. Mohammed Hussain (42) saw this mishap and collapsed with cardiac arrest and died.  City bus was going towards Ullal from Mangalore.  When it tried to overtake another vehicle, it collided with a car which was coming in the opposite direction.

All three, Sanjeeva, Pramila and driver Kamalaksha died on the spot.  Other passengers, Leelavathi, Janardhana and three years old Shriddha escaped this mishap with minor injuries.  All injured passengers are admitted to the hospital and Ullal Police registered case.  It was learnt from police that immediately after the accident robbers took gold and other valuables from the car and ran away.  Angry locals started throwing stones on the bus and broke glass.

Bantwal, January 13: During 14th South Kanara District Sahithya Sammellan, World Famous Body Builder Mr. Raymond D'Souza was felicitated by ex Chief minister of Karnataka Mr. Veerappa Moily.  He was one amongst other 14 distinguished people who were felicitated for their contribution in various fields.

 

XRD laboratory for Mangalore University
 


Mangalore, January 13: The newly established X-Ray Diffractometer Laboratory of the Department of Ocean Science and Technology Cell in Marine Geology and Geophysics, Mangalore University will be inaugurated by Dr. Harsha Gupta, Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Ocean Development, On January 14.

To familiarise the perspective users, a one-day workshop on 'X-Ray Diffraction Studies on Clays' is being held on the same day at Mangalore University.

Mangalore University is one of the nine institutions of higher learning, which has been chosen by the Department of Ocean Development (DOD), Government of India, for the establishment of Ocean Science and Technology Cell (OSTC). The objective is to promote and undertake research in the frontier area of Marine Geology and Geophysics.

The OSTC at Mangalore University is carrying out research in the coastal and offshore regions of the Arabian Sea relating to paleoclimate and sea level changes. The X- Ray Defractometer (XRD) has been acquired from Germany at a cost of Rs. 50 lakhs.

 

 

Seminar of social work held
 


 

Moodbidri, January 13: Those who are undergoing training in professional fields should be appointed in various positions was the resolution taken by the participants of the two-day seminar held here on Social Work and Mental Health.

Students from eight colleges of social work participated in the seminar organised by the Alva’s College of Social Work. The seminar sought that filling of all vacancies in schools, factories, administrative bodies, Government as well as private health centres, Grama Panchayaths, Taluk Panchayaths, Department of Social Welfare, Department of Women and Childwelfare etc.

The Government should firmly implement “Health for All,” where health according to World Health Organisation (WHO) is the physical and mental well being, they resolved.

A K Monnappa, Deputy Commissioner, who delivered the valedictory address, was presented with a memorandum to the Government. Rev. Dr. Olinda Periera, former principal of the School of Social Work, Roshani Nilaya, was the chief guest. Dr. M. Mohan Alva, chairman, Alva’s Education Foundation, presided.

 

Fire in Karikallu factory
 


Manipal, January 13: Fire broke out in a factory of Karla Cashew Chemical India Private Limited at Karikallu near Karkala, 35 kms from here, on Sunday, police said here.  Fire brigade sources said the loss was estimated at about Rs. 10 lakh. In another incident, three shops were completely gutted and two others damaged in a fire at Padubidre, 25 kms from here, on Sunday, police said.
 

Parishat for making Kannada mandatory in schools
 


Bantwal, January 13: The 14th South Kanara district Kannada Sahitya Sammelan, the three-day mega-event held under the banner of SK Kannada Sahitya Parishat has unanimously resolved to urge the Karnataka Government to drop the present system of 'medium' schools in the State and instead, make Kannada learning mandatory along with Hindi and English languages as subjects in the primary stage of education.

Announcing the set of resolutions passed during the open house session on the final say of the meet, South Kanara District Kannada Sahitya Praishat president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura said that the system should be adopted to all the schools including the government, aided and unaided ones.

The resolution was passed in the presence of Sammelana president Erya Lakshminarayana Alva and the president of the Reception committee Sadananda Poonja.

The meet demanded the government to implement the recommendations of Sarojini Mahishi Report which has been pending for long and also urged the Centre to initiate action with regard to implementation of Mahajan panel recommendation on inclusion of Kasargod into Karnataka on the basis of linguistic majority in the area.

 

 

Road Safety campaign should be continuous: SP
 


 


Mangalore, January 13: The number of road mishaps could be brought down only when people responsible for such accidents were severely punished, said Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Dharmapal Negi.

Presiding over the valedictory of the "Road Safety Week" organised by the South Kanara District Police and Regional Transport Office here on Monday, Negi said, "If a death takes place in an accident, the licence of the driver responsible for such accident should permanently be canceled. If an accident causes injuries, the driver in default should be fined severely."

Stressing on the need for making amendments to Law relating to transport, Negi said, even when a number of people succumb to road accidents, the culprit driver gets only two years of imprisonment and made to pay just Rs. 5,000 as fine. Drivers have the greatest responsibility of protecting the lives of the travelers, the IGP added.

Superintendent of Police Seemanth Kumar, who was the chief guest, said such road safety campaigns should not be limited for 'Road Safety Weeks'. They should be carried out throughout the year, he added.

Karnataka Bus Owners' Association president K. Rajavarma Ballal, who distributed prizes for the winners of essay competition, said appointment of timekeepers and establishment of checking points along highways have been successful in bringing down the number of accidents.

Additional SP Manjunath Annigeri, Regional Transport Officer Giridhar, Senior Motor Vehicle Inspector Laxman and Traffic Sub Inspector V. Mohammed were present.
