'Help children be creative'

Mangalore, January 12: Parents and teachers should help children to be creative and not just expect them to be active by overloading them with books and home works, suggested Prof Ramadas Adyanthaya, Dean, Chamarajendra Visual Art Academy at Mangalore University, Konaje, recently.

He was inaugurating a two-day workshop on fine arts organised by the Dr. N. G. Pavanje Chair in Fine Arts. He wanted Mangalore University to start a course in visual arts like other universities.

Adults wrongly perceive think that by showing beautiful pictures they can help children develop a sense of art. They should be allowed to express their inner thoughts and feelings, he said.

R. S. Mallya, former principal of Corporation Bank Staff Training College, who presided, stressed the need for originality in arts. Art also helps in the development of personality, he added.

Battling for religion shameful: Prof Asgar Ali

Former Karnataka CM M. Veerappa Moily speaks at the 23rd All India Indian Social Science Association conference in Mangalore on Sunday.

Mangalore, January 12:
Poverty, illiteracy and ignorance are the real enemies of our society and battling in the name of religion is a shameful act, Prof Asgar Ali, director of the Centre for Social and Secular Studies, Mumbai, said.

Delivering the keynote address at the inaugural of the 23rd all India conference of Indian Social Science Association (ISSA), organised by the St. Aloysius College here on Sunday, Prof Asgar stressed on the importance of communal harmony for the progress of the society.

Inaugurating the conference, former Chief Minister of Karnataka, M. Veerappa Moily said that people belonging to different ethnic or religious groups should be able to live together with dignity, respecting each other's rights, religions and cultures without subjecting any group or groups to hatred or ridicule or mental torture.

Moily said the State must treat every group on par and none should be treated as superiors to others. It must always be remembered that the citizenry is uniformly subject to the tax laws of the country, regardless of his caste and creed or religion and is therefore entitled to equal treatment under the law and its various instrumentality, he said.

In a pluralistic society, where people respect each other, where there is opportunity for a free flow of ideas, a meeting of minds, this alone can generate an atmosphere conducive to national growth and integration, he said. Hatred and intolerance are bound to vitiate the atmosphere and stifle economic growth, he added.

Five eminent social scientists - Prof. Sacchidanand Sahai, Prof. K. Gopal Iyer, Prof. Marulasiddhayya, Prof. K. Gopal and Mahesh Shukla-were honoured on the occasion. St. Aloysius College bagged the Prof Shankar Sahai Srivasthava Memorial Shield.

Rev. Fr. Rony J. Prabhu inaugurated the exhibition. Rev. Fr. Vijay Kumar, St. Aloysius College principal Rev. Dr. Prashanth Madtha, Dr. Mukul Srivasthava and others spoke. Association president Prof Rajeshwar Prasad presided over the function and organising secretary Dr. Richard Pais proposed a vote of thanks.

NRIs in Gulf lament partisan treatment

New Delhi, January 12:  The Indian diaspora in the Gulf is the unhappy lot among the participants at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations here.

Though NRIs in the Gulf represent the second largest Indian community in the world - over three million -- only a few of them have been invited.

In addition, while they were among the first to moot the idea of dual citizenship, they were the only ones to be denied. Even their demand of voting rights was not taken up at the NRI meeting.

Kerala information minister M. M. Hassan has lodged a protest with the organising committee, regarding their under-representation at the meet.

While the 1.6 million Indians working in Saudi Arabia remit about $1 billion annually, only a few of them were present at the three-day celebration.

Hassan blamed Indian embassies for failing to contact different associations of the Indian diaspora in the Gulf nations.

Organising committee chairperson L. M. Singhvi admitted, "The Gulf is not adequately represented."

The Indians settled in the Gulf are now on an agitational path against the Kelkar committee's recommendation to impose tax on NRIs remittances.

Hassan said he had urged finance minister Jaswant Singh and external affairs minister Yashwant Sinha not to tax NRI income.

The NRIs remit about Rs. 24,000 crore every year to Kerala. If this income were taxed, said Hassan, it would not only be a big blow to the NRIs, but also break the backbone of Kerala's economy.

Man strangles wife to death for want of Rs. 1 lakh

Bangalore, January 12: Angered by his wife's refusal to withdraw the Rs. 1-lakh fixed deposit in her name and give it to him, a 35-year-old man strangled her to death in Harohalli police station limits in Bangalore Rural District.

And in a bid to cover up the crime, he doused kerosene on her body, set it ablaze and claimed that she committed suicide due to depression. However, the accused, Raja of Konasandra was arrested on charges of murder today.

Police said Raja, an employee of a private company, had married Padma (25) of the same village some time ago. On learning recently that his father-in-law, Kariyappa, had deposited Rs. one lakh to Padma's account. He started demanding her to withdraw the money and hand it over to him.

Padma's refusal to heed to his requests, he used to fight with her frequently. In one such fight on Friday night, Raja allegedly strangled her to death in a fit of rage. Later, he tried to set the body ablaze to give an impression that she had committed suicide.

The jurisdictional police, who initially registered a case of unnatural death, picked Raja for questioning following a complaint from deceased's father Kariyappa, who suspected foulplay. During interrogation, Raja confessed to have committed the crime, police claimed.
