Contempt plea against newspapers thrown out
BANGALORE: Justice R. Gururajan and Justice K. Ramanna of the
Karnataka High Court on Friday declined to initiate contempt procedings
against six newspapers for publishing reports about the transfer of a
Mysore district judge.
The reports had spoken of an indirect link between the transfer and the
Mysore episode. The high court’s registrar-general had in his complaint
said the reports that district judge K.G. Hosur had been transferred, and
that he had sought voluntary retirement, were false. The high court had
not transferred the judge nor had he sought voluntary retirement.
Publication of the reports, indirectly linking the transfer with the
Mysore episode, tended to scandalise courts and undermine the judicial
system amounting to contempt of court. The reports were published on
December 21 and 22. The judges observed the news items did not amount to
contempt of court, and they did not scandalise the court or undermine the
judicial system.
Therefore, they were not inclined to initiate any action on the complaint.
However, the court observed that in a democracy, the press has to play a
responsible role. The press is not to commit any act bringing disrepute to
the system. The complainant had sought action againt Mysore Mitra, Deccan
Herald, Vijaya Karnataka, Kannada Prabha, The Times of India and Udayavani.
2 youths who conned Veerappan
Two
youths gave notorious forest brigand Veerappan a taste of his own
medicine. After living in the bandit’s den for a whole month, they did the
disappearing trick, in typical Veerappan style!
Veerappan, who has tricked the police and people of both Karnataka and
Tamil Nadu for decades, was conned by the youth, who gave the gang the
slip after stealing Rs 50,000 and a gold chain from key gangster Chandran
Gounder.
However, the youth, Selvam (20), a resident of Nainarkudikadu in Ariyalur
district and Sankar (20), a resident of Sirukalathur in Perambalur
district, who were allegedly involved in the kidnapping of late former
minister H Nagappa, landed in the police net. In a joint operation, the
Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Special Task Force (STF) personnel apprehended
the accused at the Virudhachalam railway station on Thursday night. The
Karnataka team led by Assistant Commissioner of Police G A Bawa and M M
Hills Police Inspector Prasanna V Raju and Tamil Nadu STF team led by
Inspector Rajarajan arrested the accused based on the information provided
by the nine persons arrested — six by Karnataka STF and three by Tamil
Nadu STF — earlier.
According to STF officials, the accused have confessed that they along
with Veerappan’s gang participated in the kidnapping of Nagappa from his
Kamagere residence on August 25. They have also confessed that they stayed
with Veerappan’s gang for a month and escaped after looting Rs 50,000 and
the gold chain weighing 12 sovereigns
