Bajpe airport expansion project to begin soon




MANGALORE: The work on the much-delayed Bajpe airport expansion project planned at a cost of

Rs 70 crore would commence shortly, Airports Authority of India (AAI) member (Planning) K. Ramalingam said on Wednesday.

In the first phase, the airport would be expanded with construction of the 9000-ft runway, he said. The process of issuing tenders for the work would be completed soon, he said.

DK district Deputy Commissioner A.K. Monnappa said the land acquired for the airport expansion project would be handed over to the AAI authorities.

Earlier, Ramalingam presented the Best Fire Station Trophy 2002 to Mangalore airport, which won the award for the second successive year.

 

Malaria is spreading in Santacruz

 

Mumbai, January 8: In Mumbai Santacurz area malaria spread is alarming.  Since last September 2,277 cases has been detected.  Local citizens and doctors are giving several reasons for this spread, gutters are filled with filthy water, many places gutter water is not moving and makes a lovely palace for mosquito growth.  This is the main reason mosquitoes and malaria is spreading in this are according to their complaints.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation complained that many building owners are not keeping their drinking water overhead tanks clean which causes the growth of mosquitoes.  Until mosquito growth is under control, this problem will stay and spread in the neighbourhood.

 

Three more Veerappan aides nabbed
 


Bangalore, January 8: A day after Tamil Nadu police arrested three aides of forest brigand Veerappan, Karnataka Special Task Force today nabbed three more men allegedly linked with the outlaw and involved in the abduction of former minister H. Nagappa.  Based on clues provided by Alexander Raja arrested by Tamil Nadu STF, Karnataka STF nabbed Amul Raj, his brother Sagairaja and Mudalemutthu, who had acted as conduits, police said. They were arrested from Kollegal taluk of Chamarajanagar district.

 

 

Symposium on translation to be held on Feb 1
 


Mangalore, January 8: Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy will conduct a symposium on translation in the city on February 1 and 2.  The symposium will focus on translation from other languages to Konkani and vice versa. Resource persons from Karnataka, Goa and other states will be participating in it.  The symposium will be restricted to 30 persons and no entry fee will be charged. Interested should send applications to the registrar Karnaaka Konkani Academy, Mangalore City Corporation building, Lalbaugh, Mangalore.

 

Konkani course from April 14
 



Panaji, January 8: Thomas Stephen Konkani Kendra (TSKK) will conduct the Konkani basic course from April 14-May 14 at Alto Porvorim.  The course uses a modern linguistic approach to teach Konkani to beginners and is open to those with sufficient knowledge of Devanagari script, though spoken Konkani will get the main stress. The student must know either Hindi, Marathi or Sanskrit, to read and write sufficiently well. The course will be held in two sessions, in the morning and afternoon, with lunch break. Twenty students, below 50 years of age, will be accepted on first-come-first-serve basis. Preference will be given to Jesuit scholastics, seminarians and teachers.  Application forms are available at TSKK.
 

 

India, US to review space cooperation, discuss road map
 


Bangalore, January 8: India and the US would review their space cooperation and discuss a roadmap for the future early next year, a top US official said on Tuesday.  Deputy Director, Office of Space and Advanced Technology, US Department of Space, Kenneth Hodgkins, told reporters here that he had held discussions with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in which both sides agreed to hold an Indo-US conference in India.  Hodgkins, who attended the Indian Science Congress here, said the conference would bring to India senior representatives from major space industries in the US, space trade association, and government and university experts.

The objective was to stimulate greater interest and enhance cooperation by highlighting areas of mutual interest and opportunities in the segment. "We are going to review what we have been doing in the past and what we are going to do in future," he said.  The Indo-US space cooperation currently focused on space applications, he said, adding that the US was keen on expanding it into areas of satellite navigation, tele-education, telemedicine and space science.  "We are thinking about it (on entering into agreement with ISRO on expanding cooperation). Its in preliminary stage," he said.

 

World Braille Day observed
 


Mangalore, January 8:
The Sahodaya Outreach Programme of St. Aloysius College, observed the World Braille Day, at the college Teletorium on Wednesday. V. S. Roberts, presently working as a project manager at Mobility Training Center, Attavar was the chief guest on the occasion.  Sahodaya has been working with the physically challenged for the past two years. There are about 50 active student volunteers in this outreach programme.

 

 

MCC plans to develop four traffic circles
 


Mangalore, January 8: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has plans to develop four major traffic circles - the Lady Hill Circle, Ram Bhavan Complex Circle, A B Shetty Circle and the Lal Bagh Circle - in the city. This move is expected to give a facelift to important road junctions in the city and it will be taken up shortly, according to the Mayor, M. Shashidhar Hegde, here on Tuesday.  In an informal chat with media people on the sidelines of a Guddali puja for the renovation of Pumpwell Circle, now renamed Mahavir Circle, Hegde said that renovation work of Radio Hill Park at Chilimbi too was under way. He pointed that these development works would help improve the image of the city and give better amenities to the locals and visitors.

Earlier, L. D. Ballal, lawyer and leader of Jain community, said that the Union Government had decided to celebrate the 2,600th birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir in a befitting manner. He noted that the move to develop the circle was a tribute to Lord Mahavir who gave the message of universal peace. The circle would be developed at a cost of Rs. 10 lakhs in two months.  He said that a high-level committee under the leadership of the Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharamasthala, D. Veerendra Heggade, was overseeing the renovation work. The committee had drawn up a blue print for the renovation project, Ballal said and added that the Karnataka Bank Limited had come forward to maintain the renovated circle in the future.

An architect, Rajashekar Ballal, said that the circle would have a two-feet base and a two-feet railing and also a 20-feet structure in the centre. The Corporation would install high mast lamps for better lighting at the circle. Hegde agreed to provide a public tap in the vicinity of the circle to help those dependent on wells in the existing circle to meet their needs.  The Deputy Commissioner, A K Monnappa, formally flagged off the works. The MLA, N.Yogish Bhat, the former MUDA Chairman, Suresh Ballal, the Municipal Commissioner, J. R. Lobo, and the corporator, Naveen D'Souza, were present.
 

 

'Industries welcome to open shop in New York'
 


Bangalore, January 8: Deputy Commissioner and Director International Business, at the New York City Mayor's Office, US, Ms. Linda Gras, today impressed upon the State Chamber of Commerce and Industry to set up shop in New York City and promised all help to promote the business of the local industries there.  Speaking at an interactive session with members of the industry organised by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce and Industry, she called upon them to start in a small way to begin with and promised them of providing all infrastructure facilities for the purpose within a span of just ten days of initiation.

The demand for the IT goods produced in Bangalore outweighs the demand for that produced elsewhere. Under the circumstances, the New York mayor is only too willing to help Bangalore companies set up shop in New York, she said.  Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Large and Medium Industries R. V. Deshpande said that Karnataka was the most progressive State in the country today. It is a leading State in terms of human resources producing some 30,000 engineering graduates every year. The basic infrastructure facilities in the State like roads are being strengthened. Already some 140 multinational companies are operating here and the State is looking at welcoming more of them, he said.

The process of market reforms was on in Karnataka much before it was officially initiated in 1991, today it is in the forefront and there is no question of going back on it, he said. The programme was also attended by Secretary for Information Technology Vivek Kulkarni.
