Mangalore, July 9:
The members of the Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) of the Mangalore diocese discussed various activities of the movement, after taking stock of the activities last year. Nearly 1,000 youths from South Kanara, Udupi and Kasaragod gathered in the Rosario Cathedral Church for their annual meeting.

According to former secretary of the Movement Mr. Roshan Rodrigues, there are about 147 Churches in the three districts and the ICYM has its members in 135 Churches. The ICYM primarily focuses on the personality development of the youth, social service, inter-religious relationship and cultural practices.  Surathkal MLA Mr. Vijay Kumar Shetty was the chief guest of the programme. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Shetty expressed his concern over the increasing HIV/AIDS cases in general and in South Kanara and Udupi districts in particular. He called upon the youth to be very cautious of this phenomenon.

Mr. Joseph Stalin, chairman, KEONICS, Sr. Doreen and Mr. U. K. Monu, chairman, Kanachur Education Trust also participated in the programme. Addressing the youths, Mr. Stalin observed that the Christian community is lagging behind in politics and it should take an active interest in the political happenings around it.  Msgr. Fred V. Pereira, Vicar General, Mangalore diocese, presided over the function. He stressed upon the social works to be undertaken by the community youths.

Mr. Denis D'Silva of Cordel was elected as the new president of the ICYM, Mangalore diocese. While Mr. Arun D'Souza, Ajekar was elected as the general secretary, Mr. Francis D'Souza of Shirva was chosen as the treasurer. Mr. Roshan Rodregues wil be the secretary of the Committee for Unity Programme (CUP).  As many as 16 units of ICYM were presented with rolling shields for their best performance during the last year. The Permannur parish bagged the first place and Kalyanpur Milagres Church secured second.

Miss Shilpa Fernandes bags first prize

Bangalore, July 9: Under the auspices of Mangalore Institute of Fashion Technology, national level Khadi Design Competition was held at Bangalore Sir Puttanna Chetty Town Hall for the year 2002.  Miss Shilpa Fernandes from Bangalore bagged first place in this competition and received a cup and cash prize from Cotton and Silk minister Mr. Mahadev.  Small Scale Industries minister Mr. Kashappa, past 'Miss India' Ms. Rekha Hande, MIFT president Mr. M. G. Hegde, etc., were present for the programme.  From all over India 40 designers took part in the competition.

Guidance camp by Konkan Association



 

Mumbai, July 9: For local school students, Maharashtra Konkan Association held one Guidance Camp at St. Jude's School Auditorium at Jerremerri.  Bandra St. Andrew's College principal, Mr. Augustin Mascarenhas, Mr. Valerian P. Lobo from Evershine Builders, industrialist Mr. Albert W. D'Souza were the resource persons on this camp.  Current world is very competitive and for learning there is no end.  Scientific, Technical news and studies will give more resource to our students said Mr. D'Souza.  There were more 300 multilingual students attended this camp.  Mr. Leo Fernandes welcomed the gathering, Mr. Walter D'Souza, Mr. Jeevan Mendonca introduced the guests.  Mr. Sannu A. Monis proposed vote of thanks.  Mr. Stephen Lobo compered the programme.
