M V Kamath
to be Prasar Bharati chairman
New Delhi, January 4: Konkani Suputr, noted columnist M. V. Kamath will be the next Chairman of the Prasar Bharati Board. The high-level Committee headed by Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat has recommended Kamath's name for the post, Information and Broadcasting Minister Sushma Swaraj said. Swaraj said Kamath has given his verbal consent for the post to Secretary, Information and Broadcasting, Pawan Chopra. Kamath, who was made a member of the Prasar Bharati Board last year, has worked in several news organisations and was editor of the now defunct Illustrated Weekly. He had been Times of India's US correspondent for many years. The post of Prasar Bharati Chairman had been lying vacant ever since space scientist U. R. Rao quit last year. Kamath is the third Chairman of the Board after late Nikhil Chakravarthy and Rao. The three-member Committee comprises the Press Council Chairman and a government nominee besides the Vice President.

Cop dies of
fatal 'hit and run' accident Bantwal, January 4: On National Highway at Panemangalore Grama Bolangady, one unknown vehicle hit Konaje Police Constable Indiresh (25) and he was died on the spot. He was leaving to his birthplace Sullia around 8:00 p.m. on his bike. Bantwal police registered case and looking for hit and run vehicle.
Rodrigues loses
Rs. 70,000 worth of ornaments Udupi, January 4: Mrs. Margaret Rodrigues, resident of nearby Moodabettu Sarakari Gudde complained to Manipal Police that between September 18 and December 8, 2002, she lost Rs. 70,000 worth of ornaments from her house. During this time of period, nobody was home. All were in a visit to Mangalore.
