Actor Harish Rai convicted for killing teacher

 

Mangalore, January 4: Kannada film actor Harish Acharya alias Harish Rai of 'Om' fame has been convicted for life by Udupi District and Sessions Court in a murder case.  Harish Acharya was charged in the sensational murder case of Jayarama Rao, a teacher in Christian School in Udupi who is also the promoter of a financial company. The deceased Jayarama Rao had died on November 26, 1992 at the KMC hospital where he was admitted after being attacked by Harish and his accomplices on November 13, 1992 at Mr. Rao's office.

In his dying declaration, Mr. Rao had accused Harish and three others of assaulting him. The CoD probe ordered by the state government into the incident had established the crime and had filed a chargesheet.  Harish Acharya had changed his name into Harish Rai after joining the Kannada film world and has acted in more than 50 films including the controversial film 'Om' in which he played the role of underworld don Muthappa Rai.

 

Lawyer arrested on charges of assaulting cop
 


Mangalore, January 4: Bunder police have arrested Srinivas Rao, a lawyer of Mangalore, on charges of allegedly assaulting a traffic police and hampering in doing his duties.  The session court judge has issued a shokass notice seeking an explanation from the police after listening to the statement made by the lawyer that he had been harassed in the police station and locked was inside a room without providing food and water.

It is said that the arrested lawyer Srinivas Rao tried to catch an express bus near Hampanakatta on Saturday noon at a place where pickup is not allowed. The traffic police, Babu Naik, stopped Rao from catching the bus and showed him a board indicating no pickup zone. But, Rao, instead of following traffic rules, got angry and slammed the police when in duty, police said. Another police came for the rescue of his colleague and brought Rao to Bunder Police Station, they added.  According to a complained filed by traffic police Babu Naik, police have lodged a case on Srinivas Rao for hampering the cop from doing his duties and assaulting him in public. The cop, who injured during the incidence, was admitted to Wenlock Hospital for treatment.

Srinivas Rao, who was released on a bail, told reporters that the traffic police stopped him from catching a bus near Hampanakatta on Saturday and thrashed him in public. "The police, who was on duty thrashed me and brought to Bunder Police Station in an auto rickshaw. Though I introduced myself, they locked me inside a room till evening without providing either food or water," he said.  According to court directives, Rao had been admitted to Wenlock Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Mangalore Bar Association has condemned the attack on advocate. It would convene a meeting on Sunday to decide the course of action, Bar Association president M. R. Ballal said.

 

Students from Malnad region form forum
 


Mangalore, January 4: Malnad Youth Association (MYS), a common forum of students and youths of Malnad region studying in the city has been formed here.  Disclosing this at a press conference here on Friday, the office-bearers of the association said MYA had been initiated with an objective of facilitating active involvement of members in works of national integration.

The association would strive to spread awareness on certain burning issues like AIDS, malaria, leprosy, industrial pollution etc. Also spreading importance of Kannada Language, creating awareness on plastic menace, welfare programme for backward communities were involved in the activities of the Association, they said.  MYA would provide information regarding tradition, life style, geographical condition and flora and fauna of Malnad areas to interested parties besides conducting HRD programmes, the informed.

Replying to queries they said that the as many as 400 persons have already enrolled as members of the Association and another 200 were expected to enroll. Mayor Shashidhar Hegde will inaugurate the association on Sunday, January 5 at a function scheduled to be held at Hotel Prestige here.  Former Minister K. Gangadhar Gowda, DySP D. Dharmayya, Devanand Shetty and corporator Naveen D'Souza would be the chief guests, they added. Association president elect H. M. Akshay, secretary S. P. Sudhish and joint-secretary H. S. Shambhavi were present.
 

Training for IAS/IPS aspirants
 


Mangalore, January 4:
Mangalore University will conduct a special training programme for IAS and IPS aspirants who have applied for UPSC already said a press release.  Interested candidates can collect application forms from the Sociology Department before January 13. Details can be had on from Dr. Jogan Shankar, Director, Pre-examination, Training Centre.  Scholarship and hostel facilities will be provided for candidates belonging to backward classes, minorities, schedule cast and schedule tribes. Candidates who have applied earlier need not apply, the release added.

 

 

Dr. U. S. Deepak to Head SK IDA
 


Mangalore, January 4: Dr. U. S. Deepak Nayak, Consultant Endodontist from Nayak's Dental Centre, Mangalore has assumed charge as the president of the South Kanara branch of he Indian Dental Association recently.  Nayak has also been elected as the executive committee member of Indian Dental Association, Karnataka State Branch with the largest majority during the interstate dental conference held in the city recently.  The other office-bearers of the district unit of IDA include - Prashanth Shenoy, honorary secretary, K. L. Chatra, president elect, R. Gopalkumar, treasurer and Sujay Mohan and Hassan Sarfaraj, vice presidents.

 

 

New Year Award 2003 given

Dr. Prajna M. Pai, former Dean Seth Medical College, Mumbai, Prof U. L. Acharya, former Head of Department, Physics, MGM College, Udupi, Dr. Dayanand S. Rao, Chairman and Managing Director, Remedix Pharma Private Ltd, Bangalore and Commodore K. P. Gopal Rao, Indian Navy Chennai, have received the New Year Award 2003 for their distinguished services in their respective fields.

Prof I. Narayana, Governor of District 3180, Rotary International was the chief guest at the function. Rotary Club of Udupi-Manipal, Academy of General Education, Manipal and Syndicate Bank constituted the New Year Award for 2003 jointly.  Dr. Mohandas Pai, president of Academy of General Education, Prof B. M. Hegde, V C of MAHE, Y. M. Pai, General Manager, Syndicate Bank, spoke on the occasion. Dr. H. Shantharam, Administrative Officer of AGE, Manipal, U. Damodar and Prof Ravindra Deshmukh, president of Rotary Club of Udupi-Manipal were also present on the occasion.
