Mumbai: Change of Telephone numbers

 

According to the announcement from Mahanagr Telephone Nigham Limited, Mumbai (MTNL) from 10th November, 2002 Telephone numbers in Mumbai will be changed into '8' digits instead of current '7' digit numbers.
However, the existing numbers will remain same, but   digit '2'  must be added before  dialing the 'old' number.

Example: Old number:  6754309  new number:  26754309

Caution against crackers
 


 

Mangalore, November 4: The South Kanara police have asked the Diwali revelers to ensure that no damage was caused to objects and properties of people when crackers are burnt, Deputy Superintendent of Police A. M. Sheikh said in a press release.  Taking care to avoid noise pollution by burning crackers during odd hours causing nuisance to people, not to hurt religious feelings, avoid children from the vicinity of fireworks, not to cause injuries to animals and not to have fireworks in public places.  DySP A. M. Sheikh urged the people to take precautions while burning of crackers. He also requested the public to observe the festival of lights with religious fervour and communal amity.


 

Hit and Run case: Two injured, bike damaged

 

Karkala, November 2: Nitte Grama's Parpale Cross on Karkala-Padubidri Highway, today one lorry hit one motor bike which was coming from Mangalore to Karkala recklessly and disappeared.  Bike driver Naveen Mangalore and back seat rider Charan Kumar both injured and bike got smashed.  Gramanthara Police HC Mr. Sundar Maben registered case and looking for lorry and driver.  If anyone have any information regarding this accident, please inform police.

 

Journalist commits suicide
 


 

Mangalore, November 4: The body of B. M. Rasheed (30), reporter, Lankesh Pathrike, was found hanging inside a locked room in a lodging in Baikampady under Panambur Police station limits on Saturday. Police suspect that Rasheed might have committed suicide.  The police, who conducted mahazar found the identity card of the reporter with his hometown address. In a letter, reportedly addressed to the police, Rasheed took responsibility for his death. It is learnt that Rasheed had checked into the hotel room on Friday night and when he did not come out in the morning, police who received a complaint, broke open the door and found the body hanging.  It is also learnt that Rashhed had participated in the betrothal of his sister in Uppinangady on Thursday.

Udupi, November 4: Vasanth Salian, Minister in-charge of Udupi district called upon the public to strive to make Udupi a peaceful and progressive place in the coming years.  Salian, who is also the Minister for Ports and Fisheries, was speaking as chief guests, during the Rajyotsava Day parade in Ajjarkad Maidan, he said his ardent desire to make Udupi a model district in the State, under the able guidance and blessings of Chief Minister S. M. Krishna and his political mentor AICC General Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes.

 

 

Udayavani Artists' Forum: 300 participants

 

Mangalore, November 3: Udayavani Kannada Daily from Manipal and Artists' Forum jointly held drawing competition to children as part of Children's' Day celebrations at St. Aloysius College Auditorium today.  3 to 5, 6 to 8 and 9 to PUC students were divided into three groups in this competition where 300 students took part.  St. Aloysius College Principal, Rev. Dr. Prashanth Madtha inaugurated the competition and said that these competitions helps children to bring out their hidden talents and feelings.  Artists' Forum president Mr. U. Ramesh Rao explained details of conduction drawing competitions. 

 

Foster kids from authorised groups only

 

Subrahmanya, November 3: Those who want to adopt kids, they should have these kids only through authorised groups said Women and Children's Development Department publication.  Recently in Subrahmanya a child without parents was requested by five interested people and regarding this situation officers were giving directions to public.  In government or private hospitals kids who were abandoned by mothers were sold by hospital staff to adopt came to light to the department.  Those who have no children, with the help of police used to pay money to hospital staff and take babies to adopt.  To stop this business Health and Family Development Department in its adoption guidance meeting decided to have controlled action to this problem.

Information about abandoned child should me immediately reported to Women's and Children's Development Department's district office with the help of police through hospital head.  Then child will be handed over to adoption group by WCDD inspectors said media publication.  Hospitals should keep records of such children.  Public should adopt children only through authorised groups it said.

 

'Save Kudremukh Company' movement

 

Mangalore, November 3: To extend Kudremukh Iron Ore Company work for another 20 years, South Kanara and Udupi Districts all political and social organisations joined together and decided to have 'Save Kudremukh Company' movement according to Jayasrikrishna Environment Lovers' Committee.  Within one month decided to meet President of India and the Prime Minister to request the extension of Kudremukh Company work said committee's founder president Mr. Jayakrishna Shetty from Mumbai.

Kudremumh Company work has been extended to 20 years by Central Government; however State Government filed affidavit not to extend more than 5 years.  This committee will create awareness in public that central and state governments are hurting profitable companies in the name of environment he said.  In 2001-02, Kudremukh Company earned Rs. 112 crore foreign exchange to central government.  This year it paid Rs. 220 crore electricity bill payment.  Because of iron ore transportation New Mangalore Port made a net profit of Rs. 35 crore said Jayakrishna Shetty in his explanation in a media conference.
 

Karnataka traveler to show the way
 


 

Bangalore, November 4: Any tourist visiting Karnataka will now have all the traveling tips from the distance between the various tourist destinations to details on accommodation facilities and package tours, a top official of Karnataka Tourism Department said.  “The Karnataka Traveler,” a compendium of information on tourism infrastructure in the state will be launched on November 6, to facilitate tourists visiting the state, I M Vittalamurthy, Tourism Commissioner and managing director of Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation told the reporters.

This handbook is being developed based on the tourist themes of Karnataka including heritage, wildlife, beaches, hill stations, waterfalls, adventure, festivals and so on, he said.  Each segment will detail out the various tourist locations, how to access them, must-see attractions, accommodation options with tariff rates, reservation contacts, tour operator contacts and so forth, Vittalamurthy said.

This level of detailing will help tourism trade in other markets evaluate the opportunity that exists in Karnataka and reach out directly to players in this market for business development, he said.  The traveler will also be a perfect guide for the ever-increasing number of independent travelers for whom such information will be invaluable, he said.  In addition to special sections on Bangalore, Mysore, Hampi Coorg, shopping and cuisine, the handbook will also feature relevant information on oft-spoken Kannada phrases, traditional customs, list of public holidays and festivals, Vittalamurthy said.

Karnataka Traveler will act as a key marketing tool of the Tourism Department. It will be mailed to all key tour operators in the relevant markets and will also be made available to the trade and the general public at domestic and international trade fairs, he said.  The information contained in the publication will also be available on www.karnatakatourism.org, he added. The book will be updated every year, Vittalamurthy said.

 

Rangamandira work gets under way
 


 

Mangalore, November 4: Transport Minister Ramanath Rai on Friday gave the green signal for the construction of the Rs. 3 crore theatre (Rangamandira) with a seating capacity of 2,000 while unveiling a model of the theatre at the Kadri Deer Park.  Rai sought the co-operation of the public to have the theatre completed soon. He said a void was felt in the district, where arts and culture had flourished for ages. Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath president S. K. Chouta expressed the hope that theatre activities would get a boost after the completion of the project.

He pointed out that it was sad that the district did not have a proper platform for such activities and said it was difficult to pinpoint the reasons for this. The complex would have two theatres, with a mini-theatre having a seating capacity of 500 and also an open auditorium.  The function was attended by Deputy Commissioner A. K. Monnappa, Mayor Shashidar Hegde, Moodbidri MLA Abhayachandra Jain, ZP CEO Gonal Bheemappa, Rangamandira construction committee member Yerya Laxminarayana Alva and South Kanara Sahitya Parishath president Pradeep Kumar Kalakura, among others.
 

Seminar for Konkani minority institutions
 


 

Mangalore, November 4: The Karnataka State Konkani Linguistic Minority Educational Institutions’ Association, Mangalore, has decided to conduct a one-day seminar for the heads of all institutions run by Konkani linguistic minorities in the State at the Nalanda English School in the second week of December.  The seminar, which will be held under the chairmanship of Kepul Dinesh Nayak of Canara Institutions, Mangalore will focus on the impact of the judgment of the Supreme Court regarding the constitutional rights and limitations of the minority educational institutions, stated a release from Dr. K. M. Pai, chief convener of the association.

 


 

Centre asked to amend CRZ Act
 


 

Udupi, November 4: Karnataka Minister of State for Ports and Fisheries Vasanth Salian today asked the Centre to amend the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Act which, he said, 'has come in the way of development' of tourism in coastal districts.  Presiding over a meeting convened to discuss the development activities of the district, which was attended by elected representatives of all political parties and prominent leaders, he said the existing CRZ regulations had been a major hurdle in planning development programmes.

He said he would soon convene a meeting of Minister for Transport B. Ramanath Rai, in charge of South Kanara district, and Minister for Industries R. V. Desphande, who represents North Kanara district, to formulate tourism development plan in these districts.  BJP MLC Dr. V. S. Acharya alleged that the State Government had failed to utilise grants provided by the Centre for tourism development. Vinaykumar Sorake, MP, U. R. Sabhapathy, Halady Srinivas Shetty, both MLAs, and others participated in the meeting.
