 Tempo-Moped fatal accident, one died

Udupi, December 1: Near Karavali Hotel on National Highway 17 on Sunday around 8:00 a.m. goods tempo collided with Bajaj moped and moped driver died instantly.  Passenger severely injured.  Moped driver was Mr. Krishna Naik (60) and his passenger was his daughter, Ms. Anuradha (19).  She was admitted to closeby High-tech Hospital's intensive care unit. 

Tempo was coming from Bhadravathi to Mangalore with illegal cows.  After hitting the moped, tempo hit another car which was parked nearby.  Tempo driver tried to run away after the accident without stopping the vehicle, but police chased him and stopped him near Ambalapady Circle.  There were three people in the tempo, however two ran away.  Driver, Bhadravathi resident Sharief was arrested and kept under court custody.  There were a total of 23 animals which they were transporting illegally.

Chikmagalur, December 1: In three days state level High School athletic meet, South Kanara District bagged total championship.   Boys and girls from coastal area saved their places and able to get this prestigious championship to South Kanara.   In individual group, Mangalore's Cresina Maria Pais bagged Girls Championship with 15 points.   She bagged gold medal in 100 metres dash.

Mangalore, December 1: Konkani is very rich and a great language.  We should give information to our present and future generation to preserve it.  Under the guidance of Father of Konkani Shenoy Goimbaab, all Konkanees should come forward to develop this language said Goa's ex Chief Minister Mr. Louiziano Falerio here today.  Under the auspices of Konkani Bhaas anim Sanskriti Prathishtaan Shenoy Goimbaab's 125th birth anniversary was celebrated here today at Kalaangaann, Makale, Shakthinagar.

Mr. Falerio lauded all work done in Mangalore for the betterment of Konkani language.  He said, 'Goa Konkani mogichem kulaar thor, Manglur Konkani monshanchem kalliz.'  Shenoy Goimbaab spent his whole life for Konkani and laid a solid foundation.  We are enjoying the fruits of his hard work said Mr. Falerio, and reminded spectators how he worked to make Konkani as recognized language in Goa and to get its place and honour in Goa State.

Goa's Akhil Bharath Konkani Parishat president Dr. Prof. Tanaji Halaranakar presided over the programme.  He unveiled Shenoy Goimbaab's oil painting.  Goa Konkani Academy president Mr. Uday Bhembre, Karnataka Sahithya Academy president Msgr. Alexander F. D'Souza were the chief guests.  Konkani Bhaas ani Sanskriti Prathishtan president Mr. Basti Vaman Shenoy welcomed, he said that Shenoy Goimbaabs 125th birth celebration and as its part Konkani Avanyatha Varshaacharann will be celebrated in 14 other Konkani speaking cities.

Prathishtan vice president Mr. M. Raghunatha Shet, joint secretary Mr. J. L. D'Souza, treasurer Mr. Kudpi Jagadish Shenoy, M/S. Louie J. Pinto, William D'Souza and Eric Ozario were present.  Mr. Shivarama Kamath compered the programme.

Rai assures concession for artists in KSRTC buses
 


 

Mangalore, December 1: The State Government would consider the plea of Sangeetha Sangama organisation regarding 75 concession for artistes traveling in state-owned deluxe buses during nights, Transport Minister B. Ramanath Rai said.  Presiding over the valedictory function of the ‘Sangeethothsava’ programme organised by Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan and Sangeetha Parishad at Sharada Pre-University College here on Sunday, Rai said he would consider the plea and make some help for artists.

The Minister said support from the audience is necessary for the success and survival of any form of art. Such programmes would help young artists to exhibit their talents and audience will forget their miseries listening to the melody, he added.  Sri Vidya Vallabha Theertha Swamiji of Sri Kaniyur Mutt, who blessed the gathering, regretted that Indian style of classical music and dance lack support from audience. He said the younger generation should develop interest in Indian art and culture. The seer distributed prizes for the winners of music competitions.

Karnataka Bank president Ananthakrishna was the chief guest. He felicitated Aravinda Hebbar, organising secretary of Ragadhana, Udupi, Dr. Prakash Shenoy, secretary of Shasthreeya Sangeetha Sabha, Karkala and Dr. M. Mohan Alva, convenor of Alva’s Virasat, Moodbidri for their laudable contributions to Music.  Art critic A. Ishwarayya, who is also the president of Sangeetha Sangama, delivered a felicitation address. Former Registrar of Mangalore University Prof Kaverappa, Sangeetha Parishad honorary president Madhav Rao, president Dr. C. R. Ballal and member Nithyanand Rao were present.
 

D'Cunha and Mathias bag State-level Chess championship

 

Mangalore, December 1: The City-based Derrick’s Chess School students Vaini Antonio D’Cunha and Lenita Mathias have won under 7-boys and under 7-girls Chess Championships respectively in the State-level Chess Championship held at Sirsi from November 22 to November 24 by the North Kanara District Chess Association under the auspices of the Karnataka Chess Association.

Vaini and Lenita will represent Karnataka in the coming national level championships to be held in Lucknow, said Derricks Chess School administrator Prasanna Rao in a release.  He also recalled that Vaini had created a sensation with his empathic victories over seeded players in the last years’ National-level under-7 Championships held at Chennai, where he was placed fifth.
 

Illicit liquor worth Rs. 12 lakh seized
 


 

Mangalore, December 1: The Excise Department authorities have seizes 5032 litres of illicit liquor worth Rs. 12 lakh when it was being smuggled in a lorry in the wee hours on Saturday, a departmental release said.  The value of the items along with the lorry is estimated at Rs. 16 lakh. The operation was conducted on the directions of Joint Excise Commissioner Jyothilingam by Mangalore Sun Divisional DySP R. J. Jwalanna.

Excise Inspector George Pinto, Sun-Inspector Dayanand, personnel K. Rama, Janardan, Narayan, Harish Kumar, Devarajappa and drivers B. S. Uthayya and Vincent Carlos participated in the raid.


 

Plea to fill vacancies in colleges
 


Mangalore, December 1: The Association of First Grade College Principals of Mangalore University has urged the State Government to fill up all the sanctioned posts for degree colleges immediately.  A press release of the Association has welcomed the government’s move to improve the quality and introduction of new subjects in higher education. It also requested the concerned authorities to attend the problems like appointment of teaching and non-teaching staff, approval of principal’s posts and payment of pending arrears.

Mangalore, December 1: Indian culture has 5,000 years of history.  This has been rooted in Indian citizens in the form of Dance, music, art and literature.  Culture helps to bring out hidden human talents and helps to build personality development said KMC Heart Disease Department Head Dr. Mohan Pai here today.  He was inaugurating two days inter-college celebrations, "Pre Unique."  Celebrations like this will give support and help students to bring out their hidden talents he said. 

St. Aloysius Educational Institutions Rector Fr. Vijayakumar Prabhu presided over the programme.  College principal Fr. Sweebert D'Silva gave introductory speech and wished that let these competitions in this celebration, bring humanity, and also help build relationship with each other.  In this two days celebration, 790 students from 39 colleges will take part in 17 various subjects' 23 competitions.  Assistant co-ordinatoir Dr. Norbert Lobo, Dean Mr. John D'Silva and Students Association secretary Ms. Merl Mathias, joint secretary Ms. Chery Crasta were present.

Pre Unique main co-ordinator Dr. Richard Gonsalves welcomed and Students Association president Mr. Derryl Tauro proposed vote of thanks.  Mr. Varun Pinto and Ms. Melany Rodrigues compered the programme.
