Red alert in
coastal area
According to highly placed sources, the Customs Department was maintaining special vigil in several coastal centres both in Kerala and Karnataka. Additional forces have been deployed in Kozhikode, Kannur, Badagara, Bekal and Kasargod in Kerala and Mangalore, Udupi, Kundapur, Bhatkal, Honnavar as well as Karwar in Karnataka, the sources said. In border areas like Kasargod and Manjeshwar, the Intelligence Department has been keeping strict vigil for the last one month following reports of illegal stay of certain Pakistani nationals and possible dumping of arms and ammunition in these communally sensitive areas. Even Customs and Coast Guard have tightened the vigil since last Wednesday, it is learnt. The Kannur, Kasargod and Dakshina Kannada district administrations have received directions from central intelligence regarding the matter, according to the sources. The Coast Guard authorities confirmed receiving intelligence reports about 10 days ago regarding possible dumping of illegal ammunition in the coastal region. The alert has been continued even though nothing untoward happened during new year celebrations. Crowd swings to Oscar's tune
Oscar Fernandes, who was the chief guest at the inauguration of the NSUI Udupi Block unit, after the inaugural address, received a New Year's gift from Youth Congress leader Murali Shetty, a mouth organ, which Shetty knew was dear to Oscar. While inaugurating the NSUI meet, Oscar called on the student community take up constructive work and fight AIDS. Oscar said students and youth played a major role in the Independence movement. Oscar said that Rajiv Gandhi, who realised the strength of youth in the country, felt that responsibility needs to be handed over to the youth and he reduced the voting age to 18 years. Oscar added that the present crisis in the country is unemployment among the youth and hit out at the NDA Government saying they were more interested in reducing employment than generating them by closing down PSUs through their disinvestment policy.
