Rony D'Lima passed away

 

Kallianpur, December 31: Kallianpur Grama Panchayat member Mr. Rony D'Lima (46) passed away yesterday due to short term illness.  He was a dedicated worker of Congress Party.  Deeply involved in several associations including local Milagres Church.  Several community leaders including Grama Panchayat president Mr. Janardhan Thonse, vice president Mr. Baptist Dias, Taluk Panchayat member Mr. Sudhakar Poojary conveyed their condolences.  He left behind several family members and friends.

 

Triple murder suspect surrenders to court

Mangalore, December 31: Bolar triple murder suspect Harish (29) surrendered to court today.  After the murders he was gone underground.  Through his lawyer Mr. Dinesh Hegde he surrendered to second JMFC judge.  Then he was given to court arrest.  Another suspect, Sujith is in Mysore jail.  Judge already given orders to transfer him to Mangalore jail during next court case.  Sujith complained to the lawyer and lawyer Mr. Hegde argued that because of threat on his life he should be transferred to Mangalore Jail.

 

Book on Kudubis by St. Mary's Sociologist
 


Udupi, December 31: Tribal Tradition and Change- A Study of Kudubis of South India, a book authored by Y. Raveendranath Rao, Head of the Department of Sociology of St. Mary's Syrian College, Brahmavar, will be released at the All-India Conference of Social Science Association in Mangalore on January 13, 2003.  A press release here said Mohammed Peer, Professor, Department of Sociology, Mangalore University, would release the book. T. K. Vasudev Bhat, Head of the Department of Social Work, Srinivas College of Hotel Management, Mangalore, would be present.

 

 

Hike in interest on deposits
 


Mangalore, December 31: Netravathi Grameena Bank has increased interest rates to 8 per cent for the term deposits of more than one year from December 27, 2002. The bank also offers extra interest of 0.5% on deposits of Rs. 15 lakh and above.  The bank has reduced the rate of interest on advances for loans on agriculture and income generation activities. The bank charges only 12% interest on loans given against pledge of jewels, a press note from the Bank's Chairman N. Srinivasan said.

 

 

Praises for Abbakka from Oscar Fernandes
 


Ullal, December 31: Awareness of the glorious history of the region was a must for youth to inculcate a sense of national pride, said Karnataka Transport Minister B. Ramanath Rai. The life and times of the likes of Veerarani Abbakka will go a long way in achieving the said objectives, he added.  At the valedictory session of the fifth Veerarani Abbakka Utsav-2002, which concluded at the Ullal Bharath High School grounds on the outskirts of the city, Rai said it was a benefiting tribute to the queen of Ullal in whose memory the festival is organised every year.

As part of the valedictory session of the fifth Abbakka Uthsav, Rai conferred Veera Rani Abbakka Award on Kannada writer Yajnavathi Keshav Kangan and Yakshagana Bhagawatha (singer) Leelavathi Baipadithaya on the occasion.  Chief guest on the occasion, Rajya Sabha member and general secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC) Oscar Fernandes said, bravery of the Queen Abbakka, who fought the Portuguese to prevent them from entering the Mangalore Port, was an exemplary tale. 

Abbakka was one of the first opponents of imperialism. There was need for national recognition for Abbakka and the festivals dedicated to her should be organised at the state-level on a large scale.

 

 

Traders' association formed in Mangalore
 


Mangalore, December 31: South Indian District Sellers' Association (SIDSA), a common forum of traders, engaged in direct network and multilevel marketing has been formed in Mangalore.  Announcing the opening of the new body at a press conference here on Saturday, the president N. Balakrishna Sharma said the association would strive to provide necessary information regarding the concept of direct marketing to the general public.

He said that direct marketing has provided immense employment opportunities to millions of youth in the country. Unfortunately, persons engaged in this business were deprived of job security, proper guidance and training, he added.  Taking benefit of the growing rate of unemployment in the country, certain ill-motivated companies were duping the innocent, he lamented.

While elaborating the objectives of the association, he said SIDSA would impart training as well as guidance to the members. He said the organisation would try to identify certain fake companies deceiving both customers and the sellers.  The Association had been registered under Karnataka Registration Act and operate in States like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andra Pradesh, replying to queries. The registered office had been opened at Utility Royal Tower in Hampanakatta, he said and requested the direct sellers to enroll themselves as members.

The Association general secretary Chittaranjan Bolar, vice-presidents K. A. Narayan Bhat, Dr. Thomas Mathew, joint secretaries Jeevaraj Puranik, Ali Ibrahim, and treasurer H. S. Bhat were present on the occasion.

 

 

SUDATTA' launching Mangalore chapter
 


Mangalore, December 31: 'SUDATTA,' a support organisation of the adoptive parents associations, will be launching its chapter in Mangalore on January 5.  SUDATTA's main focus being building a family atmosphere around the adopted child by continuously providing inputs on parenting from various experts, access to child behaviour specialists and child psychologists, holding workshops for parents on all aspects of adoption, organising formal and informal meets between the adoptive families etc.

It will also provide a platform for the adoptive parents, adopted children and those concerned with adoption to come together and interact with one another. SUDATTA has already formed adoptive parents associations in different places in Tamil Nadu, Pune, Bangalore and Mysore.  According to SUDATTA president Dr. S. Saraswati, SUDATTA as a support group, "feels stronger in resolving the issues and concerns related to adoption." It had also taken initiative in forming a national level federation of all the adoptive parents association.

'Prajna' Counselling Centre in Mangalore will be holding a one-day programme on the occasion of launching of the adoptive parents association of SUDATTA Chapter in Mangalore on January 5.  Dr. Saraswati will introduce SUDATTA while its founder S. Shankar will deliver the keynote address, which will be followed by a session on sharing of experiences by adoptive parents. Hate, fear today's ideals: Vandana Shiva
 


Udupi, December 31: Attended by religious leaders and seers at Ravindra Mantap, MGM College, the National Dialogue on "Towards Culture of Harmony and Peace" organised by Rathabedhi Geleyaru, Udupi, concluded with a Udupi Declaration. It discussed consensus on how to attain harmony and peace in the context of globalisation, religious intolerance and violence.  At the discussion, Sri Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji of Sri Pejawar Mutt, Sri Murugharajendra Swamiji, Prof Samdhong Rimpoche, Rev. Dr. John Fernandes, Annaji Ballal and others participated. At the concluding session, Dr. U R Ananthamurthy presided.

"Globalisation is shutting out all democratic, political, ecological and spiritual spaces available, resulting in more violence," scientist-activist Dr. Vandana Shiva said, as main speaker at the inaugural session. She said, Gujarat was one of the most globalised states.  Hitting out at Hindutva's proponents, Dr. Vandana said Hinduism attained negative definition in their hands. "Hate and fear are unfortunately being offered as the ideals."  She added that globalisation benefits only a small group, which also resulted in farmers' suicides, tribal deaths, mass starvation and poverty.  Another speaker at the inaugural session Dr. Shiv Vishwanathan from CSDS, New Delhi said, religion cannot the basis of nationalism.

 

 

Amusement park opens today
 


Mangalore, December 31: For fun lovers and tourists looking for some real amusement in the city, 'Manasa' is all set to woo visitors to Pilikula Nisargadhama, where an amusement and water park will be inaugurated on Wednesday. Located about 12 km from the city, the Manasa Amusement and Water Park could well become a sought-after tourist destination. According to the promoters, the amusement park will be extended in phases with a total investment of over Rs. 20 crore, comparable to the famous amusement centres in the South.

Manasa is expected to be the ultimate destination for fun with the park being developed on sprawling 15 acres amidst the serene beauty of the Pilikula Nisarga Dhama, Oswald Pinto, managing director of GM Amusement and Leisure Park Limited, the promoters of Manasa said. The variety of equipments and games include varied rides, slides, virtual beach with real waves, fun zone and surprises for everyone, he said.

In the first phase of the project developed at an investment of Rs. 10 crore, a water park and a go-karting ring has been set up. In the second phase, more games will be introduced and developed in due course of time. The park would be complete with the installation of a single-track battery operated 'monorail,' the first of its kind in this part of the country. Pinto said he was confident of the success of the project as its tourism potential was enormous.

The amusement park, supplemented by the Pilikula Nisargadhama project which will have a natural park integrating wildlife safari, ropeway, boating club, golf course, museum, science centre, arboretum and aquarium among other facilities, is sure to become one of the most sought tourist destinations in the state, he added. The Manasa Amusement and Water Park will be inaugurated on Wednesday by Union Minister for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Ananth Kumar. State Minister for Transport B. Ramanath Rai will preside over the inaugural function attended by MP Vinaykumar Sorake, MLA Vijay Kumar Shetty, President of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Jyothi R. Salian and Mayor of Mangalore Shashidhar Hegde among others.
