One more held in bank robbery case

Mangalore, November 30: Close on the heels of arrest of two accused in the November 23 cooperative bank robbery, involving Rs. 1.35 crore in jewelry and Rs. 6 lakh in cash, the South Kanara Police nabbed one more person near the bank premises at Katipalla, about 15 kms from here on Saturday.  The main accused Vital Shetty who was arrested on Friday, told Police that he along with one Yusuf and owner of the building Sripathy Achar had committed the robbery, Superintendent of Police Seemanth Kumar Singh told reporters here.

Police recovered about 15 kgs of gold worth Rs. 60 lakh from Achar, a former gold businessman, he said. Achar had suffered losses in business and became mastermind of the plan with three others, he added. Singh said with the seizure, all the gold looted by them had been recovered.  The floor-cutting machine was bought in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and handgloves in Mumbai to avoid any clue to be left by accused, Singh said. The fourth and second main accused, Yusuf, was still at large and efforts were on to track him soon, he added.  The car, which was used for committing the offence, was also seized, he added. On Friday, the Police had recovered 40 kgs gold (out of 50 kgs) and 4.20 lakh (out of Rs. six lakhs) from the two accused.

Mangalore, November 29:
 In a swift operation, the South Kanara police arrested two main accused in a cooperative bank robbery involving Rs. 1.35 crore worth jewelry and Rs. six lakh in cash,[According to other media report, this amount is about 2.05 cr] ,  near Katipalla, about 15 kms from here, on Friday.  The accused were identified as Laxmana, a bank employee and his friend Vittal Shetty, Dharpal Negi, IGP (Western Range) told reporters here on Friday.

The police have recovered from them 40 kgs of gold jewellery (out of 50 kgs) and cash Rs. 4.20 lakhs (out of Rs. 5.94 lakhs), and are on the look out for four more, he said. On interrogation, Vittal Shetty confessed that he along with the bank employee Laxman and three others committed the robbery, he said.  The three others, who were from outside Karnataka, were absconding with ten kilos of gold and Rs. 1.74 lakh, Negi said. This is the biggest-ever robbery committed in the State, he said.

The criminals were technically skilled, experienced gang and exceptionally daring to cut the ceiling roof of the bank between 22:30 hours to 0400 hr. on Saturday night, he said.  Two Tamil magazines, which were found near the locker, were to mislead the police, he said. They had entered the South Canara District Cooperative Central (SCDCC) bank on Saturday night by drilling a hole in the ceiling and decamped with jewellery worth Rs. 1.35 crore and cash of Rs. six lakhs.  On November 27, four separate teams were formed and sent to Kerala, Chikamgalur, Bantwal and Belthangady and one more team to Chennai, in the backdrop of two Tamil magazines found near the locker.
