Rev. Fr. Ronald Cutinha

"If our
brothers are oppressed, then we are oppressed. If they hunger, we
hunger. If their freedom is taken away , our freedom is snot
secure. Grant us brotherhood, a brotherhood not of words but of
acts and deeds" The Institute of Social Development echoes
these words of a prayer written by the American writer, Stephen
Vincent Benet.
We have large number of people
living in the rural and backwards areas of the districts of
Dakishina Kannada and Udupi and only few of them are economically
empowered. The social activists who had tried to uplift them could
not do much as they lacked training. Therefore, the need for well
trained personnel in the social development field was acutely felt
by the diocese of Mangalore, NGO and others.
Rev. Fr. Ronald Cutinha, a qualified
leader, is an instrument with his team in providing various
training programmes through ISD(Institute
for Social Development)
Training programme includes, Social
Development, Social and Women`s Issues, self-reliance, Personality
Development, Leadership and the role of family, History,
Integration and Religious Harmony, Health and Hygiene,
Environment, Education, Communication and Technology. Also,
training for Coordinators, project holders, administrators,
directors, church leaders as well as grassroots level social
leaders.
Rev. Fr. Ronald
Cutinha, Ph.D. founder director of ISD is in charge of the
Institute. He is also Managing Trustee and the Chief Functionary
of the Trust. He was presented with "Jana Seva Nidhi" award for
1997-98 by Kerala Konkanni Catholic Pratistana for his yeomen
service and multifarious activities in the socio- developmental
field in the district of Kasargod.
Dr. Cutinha who is a
scholar in history , has written a book on 'Training of trainers
for social Transformation' and has edited 'Empower' directory, a
directory of the NGOs of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts,
released on 30th September, 2000. At present he is busy working on
the directory of all the christian places of worship in these
districts, containing their history as well , apart from his
routine training activities.
The Institute of
Social Development (ISD) was established with Rev. Dr. Ronald
Cutinha, a coady graduate, as its director on August 5, 1997 to
reach out to the training needs of the diocese of Mangalore,
covering the district of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Bidar of
Karnantaka and Kasargod of Kerala, and also to meet the needs of
other Dioceses of Karnanatka, namely, Bangalore, Belgaum, Bellary
Chickmaglur, Karwar, Mysore and Shimoga. It was registered on Feb.
5, 1998 as a Public Charitable Trust. Its new premises were
officially inagurated on April 14, 1998. It is an autonomous
development organisation.
