Mother Teresa moving closer to sainthood
Vatican City, September 22: Mother Teresa, who dedicated her life to helping people she called "the poorest of the poor", may be beatified as early as next year, marking the final step before sainthood, Vatican sources said on Monday. The sources said a committee was due to meet at the Vatican this week, possibly as early as Tuesday, to formally declare that Mother Teresa, who died in 1997, possessed "heroic virtues" of the Christian faith. This would pave the way for the formal declaration of a miracle attributed to the intercession of the diminutive Albanian-born woman who spent much of her life helping the world's most destitute people. The formal declaration of a miracle, expected as early as next month, would open the way for beatification, the step before sainthood in the Roman Catholic Church. Promoters of her sainthood say a woman who was suffering from a tumour was inexplicably cured after praying to the nun. If a Vatican commission recognises the miracle, a ceremony to beatify her could be held next year, Vatican sources said. A second miracle attributed to Mother Teresa would be needed after the beatification in order for her to be declared a saint. Under church rules, five years must pass after a person dies before the long bureaucratic procedure for sainthood can even begin. But in 1999, Pope John Paul granted a special dispensation so the procedure could start less than two years after her death. Devotees of Mother Teresa, who was known as "the saint of the gutters", began pressing the Vatican soon after her death to allow the nun's sainthood cause to move more quickly because they said her holiness was clear to many around the world.
A park for the
faithful
Fr. Anthony Swamy, former parish priest of the church, and the brain behind the conception and execution of the Miracle Park, says, "I wanted to spread the message of our faith through devotion to St Anthony." With generous donations from devotees from just about 'everywhere' and professing other faiths too, the Miracle Park has become a work of art, and an expression of faith that has to be seen to be believed. With flowering plants and trees of just about every existing species, the Miracle Park is at its colourful best throughout the year. The centerpiece of the park is a 17.5-ft statue of St. Anthony carved out of a single granite block by master-sculptors from Maha-balipuram, Tamil Nadu. Set on an 8-feet pedestal, the imposing statue towers over the park like a caring sentinel "Every Tuesday is St. Anthony's day. Devotees throng the church and the park all day long," says Fr. T. Bernard, the parish priest. "Given the number of visitors we have even on other days too, this shrine has the potential of becoming a major pilgrim centre in a few years' time," he adds. "The park was inaugurated last year by Social Welfare Minister A. Krishnappa. He was so impressed that he promised to include it on the tourism map of the state and make efforts to list it on the tourism map of India too," says Fr. Anthony Swamy. Such a listing will definitely be of great help to devotees because the Miracle Park is accessible only via a circuitous route from the city. However, as is evident every Tuesday, for the faithful heading towards the Miracle Park, detours and blockades enforced en route to facilitate the completion of Krishnarajpuram flyover are no deterrents.
